what shud I send over to new neighbors?

I live in a building and over the summer about 3 new couples moved in. I just got back and Id like to send something over. I usually bake cookies but cookies for 3 pp is a lot, any ideas of what I can make/bake?

When I moved in, a simple plate with cookies or something was really nice. You don't have to make so many. One reg. recipe of cookies is at least 3 dozen. You don't need to send more than 1 doz per couple.

The only thing that you have to realize is that some people don't eat other people's food so they might throw it out.

I guess it depends on the community, etc. How about a nice little thing of cookies from the bakery that has a sticker with its hechsher on it? Of course that gets more expensive.

I think baked goods is a nice touch, and I doubt they would throw them out. I guess if they do, I wouldn't know.
so the vote is for cookies? I was thinking of something less of a patchke (y am I being so lazy?)....any other ideas? and if its cookies so what kind is universally acceptable as yummy?

I think a note with an invitation to a shabbos meal would be great. that way they could get to know the neighbors. if not a shabbos meal, maybe just dessert or an afternoon get together. I would have loved that from my neighbors when I moved in. (I admit, though, that the marble cake and devil dogs were appreciated. but I still don't know many people on the block.)

I like all the above replies. But you could also send over your older kids to play with their babies if they have any to give them a chance to settle in.

dora, that's a great idea! if you're worried about too much of a patchke, make something that cuts up easily into bars (like brownies), or pours into muffin tins like muffins or cupcakes. that way you don't have to sit and roll all of the cookies. you just make one batter and pour into 3 pans/tins, etc.

Kugal is a great idea. When I moved in, I got a nice chocolate platter from 8 neighbors together. It was a great warm feeling.

Kugal is good to nosh on friday afternoon, specially if they aren't going to stay home for shabbos they won't really have shabbos food to munch on.

If you do want to stick with cookies but avoid the potchke, why not make them into bars. You can just pour the cookie batter into a large tin pan (little smaller than a cookie sheet) and bake for approx 30 min, cool and cut into bars. Hurray for the easy way out!!

Anything you are making for yourself, make a little extra. It's not the item but the thought that will make them feel welcome. Inviting them for a shabbos meal is great as long as you have room for everyone. I like the kugel idea- everyone likes potato kugel and it really makes the house feel shabbosdik

Speaking of patchke, my mother used to send over fresh challahs. But unless you are making for yourself anyway a huge batch, I vote for the kugel idea, YUMMM!!
