Wow, this makes me feel so much better but I do have a few questions now that I've read the responses.
I was born frum so maybe I missed being taught about the Friday-malachim thing. Where is it mentioned that changing linen is something the malachim are checking up on? I have never heard of that and my husband has never mentioned anything of that nature to me ever, I mean if it was up to him he would tell me that our linen does not need to be changed more than once a year! Like when he was a bochur living on his own. What I really want him to say is that he'll change the linen for me, instead he tells me not to do it...but that's a different story. Disclaimer: he is not a dirty person, he just thinks he's helping make my life easier by not having me stress about it.
1stimer - You made me feel so good to know there are more like me out there, thanks.
I think what I am learning is that I must enlist the help of my kids more often. It's funny since my FIL told me that just today as well. My older two want to help I just have to learn to delegate better and take the time to teach them, then I guess the younger ones will follow suit. It's just sometimes I like to be able to control the orderliness of my way that I just find it more efficient to do it myself, but then I get upset when I don't have time to do anything but laundry, laundry, laundry!

BTW I could use more cleaning help, but where I live it's not that easy. So I pay a high school girl who wants to make some extra cash. She really doesn't give me much time just about 2-3 hours a week! So I don't want to waste that time by her changing linen or folding laundry. This way I know all the floors are being cleaned well at least once a week then I just have to do the maintenance during the week. It's not much but at least I have that. I have a two-floor house with 5 bedrooms and 5 children bli ayin hora.

I think this malachim checking up on beds is a chasidish thing. I have never heard of it either. My dh is the opposite - if he doesn't like that the bed linen hasn't been changed he will do it himself.
It is an incentive for me to do things though. Because when he does end up doing the things himself I feel guilty...
Sometimes I wish he was more like 'oh never mind if it doesn't get done'... there's no winning!

once a week by cleaning lady.
I grew up in a house where our sheets were changed once a year - before pesach.
I guess we just get used to anything - americans are to clean. We want everythign to be spotless, germ free, etc. It really isn't so much healthier to live that way considering we are allowing the stronger bacteria to grow since we kill off all the weaker ones.

I don't want to talk about the cleaning lady issue as I lost mine a few months ago and miss her terribly. As for the bed linens I do my best to change them every week (normally on Thursday night so I can get them in the washer before shabbat). However, sometimes when the children are laying on the bed there is a diaper leak or a bottle leak and then the bed linens get changed again.
I also try and keep the house clean on a list of importance... Public areas first :-) then the bedrooms

We all make that mistake sometimes. Of course you can do it better, faster, in the short run. (they may not do as good a job as you till they have their own home--if ever!) It's the long run that counts. Consider it part of their chinuch.
Y'all did understand that when I said I have live-in help I was referring to hubby and kids, right? (I didn't say "paid" help! tho' I do pay my kids to do extra things that are not their job, like ironing my shirts.)

chen, I believe it was amother who said that about her 5 helpers. Are you admitting that you're amother?

True, very true. I was referring to my own personal situation. I can count on my son sleeping for 2-3 hours during the day when I can take care of my housekeeping duties, and while he does tend to make a mess, he would make the same mess if I had a cleaning woman too.

your house isnt spotless after the cleaning lady leaves and kids make a mess hpowever it takes alot of stress off because you know once a week someone is helping out with the cleaning and it isnt all on your shoulders. even thyough things get messy they are CLEAN, and someone else helped out!! I think anyone who can afford it really should have one it just makes life easier.
Making your beds for shabbos IS NOT a chassidish thing. I just found the source... Its in shulchan Aruch Harav, 262:1, 302:10 IT says your beds should be made for shabbos.... But it doesnt say anything about new linen. I still think its something that should be done lekovod shabbos but its not against halacha if someone cant for whatever reason....

your right sarahd. there still would be a mess in the house but certain things would get done. like things that you don't really have time for since there are only certin amount of hours in the day! I was just saying that a lot of people assume, or so it seems. that people think oh you have a small house why isn't it clean? but I have been cleaning, All day! my ds just brings in mess and filth! oh well my mother would say thank G-d you son makes a mess it means he's healthy! and that you have children! my mother didn't have children for 10 years.
I do change my kids linens almost every day! I need to buy more sheets.

My beds are MADE for shabbos. Nicely with bedspreads and toss pillows, but not fresh linen:(
My linen basicly goes from white to colored, and back to white.......

The Shulchan Aruch HaRav was written by the Alter Rebbe, if he wasn't Chassidish I don't know who is.

Totally OT, but re: alluding to TH. Years ago when I was in college, I made extra money teaching Hebrew to Reform and Conservative kids. I got asked all kinds of questions about being frum, not just by the kids, but by their parents too. So one woman says to me that she had a question. Her grandmother had been Orthodox and she had once asked her grandmother "what exactly does it mean to be Orthodox?" Her grandmother replied "You keep kosher, you keep shabbos and you keep clean." So the woman was very confused b/c she had recently been to the house of someone who was 'very Orthodox' (in fact in this case, a chasid) and their house was DIRTY! How could that be? For the life of me I couldn't convince this woman that her grandmother probably wasn't refering to housekeeping.

the alter rebbe wrote the shulchan aruch based strictly on halacha for the world not just for chassidim, its not based on chassidus, for that he wrote the tanya. Its accepted authority amongst all ashkenazim.

Um, the shulchan aruch written by Rav Yosef Karo is accepted (with the glosses of Rav Moshe Isserles) by all Ashkenazim. The shulchan aruch harav is not.

its written in the shulchan aruch harav BASED on the TUR which is something everyone holds by. And actually shulchan aruch harav is accepted by most people. its halacha.

According to dh 'it's acceptable, but not accepted by most' - in otherwords, if you rely on the S.A. Harav, you are following halacha b/c it was written by an 'acceptable' rabbinic authority, but outside of Lubavitch most people follow other authorities.
