how much do you want to spend? where will she be living? when I made aliyah my friends bought me a small stereo as I was going to be living in ulpan for the first 5 months and all my big things weren't being shipped until after. Or what about a good sturdy backback - that's very useful here. If she's a very close friend and you want something more personal how about a nice photo frame with a picture of the two of you in it?

Whats the budget?
The first thing I thought of was an iPod or a journal. Personally I would have loved those two things.

what I would have appreciated was a basket w/info of all the different hechsherim,and easy access phone numbers,a map of all the buslines(which most hotels have),a 2place setting of good hard plasticware,soap,towel,handtowel,toothbrush,deodorant,tissues,cheap phonecard 20nis etc.
saves her time looking thru her bag for these things,and she doesnt' have to unpack right away bc she has the basket of necessities.
