Can you help with this debate in my family?
Is it sect specific? I always thought that chasidish and heimish women didn’t fast on the smaller fasts. And that it was a thing, not just my mother didn’t fast.
ETA - just in case someone takes this the wrong way. It’s seriously just a curiosity question, and I’m wondering if I’m off with my understanding.

Most chassidish women I know are lenient. I know women from Ger bobov and Hungarian sects. I don’t know every sect.

Many don't fast.
I know some that do fast and it's not a sect thing, more like a family thing.

Chassidish women generally only fast on yom kippur & tisha b'av yet certain sects don't fast on tisha'a b'av either.
Asarah b'teves is a halachically a harsher fast than tisha b'av, I don't understand why we fast tisha b'av and not asarah b'teves.

We don’t fast if pregnant, breastfeeding, or sick.
The joke is that if you’re not pregnant or breastfeeding you’re probably sick.

In my community almost no women fast - but they admittedly take leniencies, they're not following any tradition to not fast. I have heard women talking about going to the rav for heters for things like headaches. I honestly think this generation has just become pretty lenient on a lot of things... If we want moshiach now we should tighten up...

Interesting.
I don’t know such women who aren’t pregnant or nursing or sick and don’t fast on Tisha bav.

My grandmother - she should live to 120 - grew up Chassidish (Viznitz). She told me she never missed a fast, even in Auschwitz.
I wonder if Viznits is still like that today....

This! I gave birth less than 3 days before Yom Kippur and my chasidish roommate was telling this to everyone on the phone! I’m not chasidish btw and was told that year not to fast until baby was exactly 3 full days.
(She was also telling her friend what to pack for the hospital and somehow her pearls were on that list lol!

Viznitz women officially only fast yom kippur & tisha b'av, but there are women in every sect that do fast all fasts.

In my community (belz) we don't fast on Tisha bav when pregnant or nursing, although I think usually you ask first. We also don't fast the other minor fasts.

Ger does fast tisha b’av. Unless maybe someone is pregnant or nursing. But even then I was told to fast unless I really don’t feel well.
(Didn’t help me cuz I feel horrible the next day not the day of the fast)
