If you used a reading tutor how long it did take to get your kid to to grade level? How many months or years did your child need tutoring?
Trying to figure out. I just got into this field and want to know what is typical.

Depends on the source of the kids struggle (just needs a bit more attention or fully dyslexic) and whether it's a tutor or a reading specialist with OG or Wilson etc

You became a reading specialist? And you don't know that there are many variables and no generic answer here?

Yes, but there should still be a range..
I'm talking kids that have some kind of reading issue. Not kids that are just a little bit behind or just need practice.

It's going to vary a lot by individual factors.
I do recall hearing from someone at a school for dyslexic kids that most kids are ready to return to mainstream after about 2-3 years. That's with an intense daily schedule of individualized intervention with OG and speech therapists, but it's also starting out with kids who had big enough difficulties to go to a special school for it in the first place. So I'm not sure about kids getting a few hours a week of after school help.

Thanks, I appreciate this. I can extrapolate.

Depends on the age, the disability, the child’s ability to focus, any behavioral issues, there are so many variables.
Also depends what your end goal is. There is typically no one finish line for when a kid graduates unless they get up to grade level.
(Source : I am a intervention specialist and my husband is a kriah specialist)

Taking focus and behavioral issues out of the picture. How long is normal to get a kid up a full grade or two?

It depends, are you working with him instead of class or is he getting your help in addition to sitting in reading class every day?
If I would work with a neurotypical kid who was 1 year behind, I would estimate it would take about 6 months of bi-weekly tutoring to catch them up.
I would expect a kid with dyslexia or other learning disabilities to take longer.

Often if they are so far behind they are not able to learn too much in school...
Wow! That is very long! Thanks for the info!

As a Wilson dyslexia practitioner, for a kid learning an OG program such as Wilson, which has 12 steps, it can take on average a child to complete all 12 steps in 2-3yrs. However, it all depends how often the child is being seen and how long each session is. The more the child is working in the skills, the easier it is for the child to retain and practice the skills and retain the learned information. Kids with dyslexia need lots Of review and repetition in order to rebuild the neuropathways in the brain.

This is what I do now for public schools. I don’t know yet. But, I, definitely see an improvement bh and we’ve only had a few sessions so far, so I’m glad it’s working bh.

2 years. Many years later we had the child reevaluated. Tests at 4th grade level in some areas. 11th grade level in others. 5-8 in others. Just because they learned to read dosn't mean they are magically at grade level. The proccesing and memory issues are still there. Kid is a 9th grader.

How is this going to make a difference when each kid you teach will be different?
I know this rhetorical question will come off sounding snarky and I don't mean that, I just think it would be more helpful for you to focus on things that will practically improve your practice.

Of course I am doing things to improve and I want to check it against other ppls experiences. I'm currently working with a difficult case and I'm also seeing progress very varied. So it's helpful for me to know.
I'm also an anxious person by nature and I want to make sure I'm not giving my clients anything less than great work.
Currently was able to get 2 years word recognition growth in the span of about 4 months.
