this feels like a dumb question, I opened a new box of floating wicks and for some reason they flicker a lot and wont stay lit, am I missing something obvious that I’m doing wrong? (the cork part is of course pointed the right way) I bought them in Vienna so they might not be the newest, any ideas?

I don't think they can really age or go off. Maybe they are just not good quality to begin with. If they are going out, are you sure you make the stick up part that is lit long enough?
