I am having a discussion with someone, and I want to see what everyone does.
Do the candles/oil get prepared at night, once your light goes out, some time during the day, or in the evening before lighting time?

Whenever it makes sense for me to do it on that particular day. Why would I have a rule about when I prepare it?

No rules, just a question.

There is an inyan to prepare the candles during the day. In the Temple the menorah was prepared during the day, sometimes even lit to make sure that everything would go smoothly when lighting at night. It's not a mitzvah per se to prepare the candles during the day: you can prepare them right when you need to light, but it's nice to prepare them ahead of time. But only earlier in the day, not the night before, which would give the impression that you haven't yet lit that night's candles.

Practically, my husband prepares the candles when he comes home and then calls us all to come light (the kids prepare theirs at the same time).

If we have time in the morning we do it then, otherwise I do it after work.

I usually prep during the day. I don't want to be messing around at lighting time.

DH prepares them anytime from an hour or 2 until just before lighting.

Dh prepares his at night or in the morning before work because he wants it ready to light as soon as he gets home. Boys prepare theirs when they get home from school because there’s time between then and when we light.
