I have no issues getting my family members gifts for Chanukah and do not see it as a consolation prize for not celebrating xmas. Chanukah is a fun time and this year we definitely need that. My parents grew up receiving gelt and Hershey bars! They were never much into Chanukah gifts and neither were my in-laws. Dh may not remember and if he does it will be because the kids remind him and I'll get a book on Amazon. Lol.

My grandparents got chanukah presents. I remember them telling us about it. So do I have your permission to do chanukah presents in my family?

My great-grandmother told me all about how she grew up getting gifts, as did her own parents and grandparents (and that was a time before Xmas gifts was even a custom) She didn’t know when it started but her grandparents had told her the purpose was to get the children excited about the holiday and “bribe” them to learn about it. I’m guessing maybe Chanukah used to not be as festive as it is now and older generations had to do what they could to keep the younger generations interested. Similar to the idea of giving gelt.

Either way it has nothing to do with Xmas.

I don't think I'm getting anything on Chanukah per say. I have relative coming to Israel two weeks after Chanukah and I took advantage of the black Friday sales in the USA to order some needed and uneccesary items as well to them, including a few items I've had on my wish list for a while that don't ship here or are much more expensive here.

I'm looking forward to enjoying all the other fun parts about Chanukah this year.

Between myself and dh, and any adults in my family of origin, we never had an actual custom of Chanukah gifts, it just happens to be that we're due to treat each other around now and it's a good excuse to actually make it happen (rather than "someday when I get around to it.")

But for the kids it was always a thing. Gelt was the primary tradition but gifts were also done - after all, gelt is of limited usefulness to a child who can't independently go to a store. We didn't do anything extreme - it was generally a new book, tape, or game. Something to make the yom tov exciting. We never did a gift every night.

For my kids I try to do something special every night though not a gift - a couple of nights will be homemade latkes or doughnuts, one night getting together with cousins, one night a party at the shul... And one or two nights a present.

In terms of couples giving gifts to each other, the 3 regalim are the main time for that. But the last round of yom tov was so hectic with back to school, 15 yom tov meals, everyone home on and off all month, no one had time or energy for much.

Just putting in a suggestion to buy Israeli products if you are planning to give gifts. I want to help the Israeli economy as much as possible. Here are some thoughts:

Sabon bath and body products
Max Brenner Chocolate
Israeli Wine
Emmanuel Judaica
Barbara Shaw Gifts
Hoshen Gifts
Gilis Goodies (for gift baskets within Israel)

Already bought myself a set of china intended for YT use on sale Smile
Was quietly debating with myself if to buy or not. Decided yes since it's intended for YT and after all life must go on.
That kind of a sale that comes around "once in a life time"
