Would love to surprise my kids (teen and preteen boys) with an electric drum set . Looking to spend up to $300
I see some sets on sale on amazon.
Does anyone have a good set they could recommend or features it should or shouldn’t have
( yes only electric so it can be played with headphones , I’m not tolerating real drums…! )

It still makes plenty of noise even with using headphones as the kick pedal and sticks cause it. I bought my son an electric drum set thinking I won’t hear it and I was in for a noisy surprise 😮

Correct, it's still very loud. At one point I had both a regular acoustic, and electric. The regular one was ear splitting, like you were able to hear it outside.
The electric one is a lot quieter, but you can still hear it behind a closed door.
