Akslers, that place was amazing! Wasn't it called house of Aksler? There was a very old man in charge who watched you with eagle eyes and just this whole entire mishmash of stuff. Souvenirs, toys, chatchkes. It was kind of like the room of requirement in Harry Potter.
Sharons bakery. It wasn't the best bakery (grodz definitely is!) but they stayed open all night and their bread was pretty good. We would go after pesach and buy freshly baked round white rolls, which was all they sold on motzei pesach and bring them home to eat with butter. (a much much better idea than pizza imho)
Remember those giant colourful meringues grodz sold? And I swear the hot snacks tasted better when I was a kid.
Who remembers the (sadly) pretty short lived Carmellis that opened for a few years (about 98/99 it was open). I loved their tuna bagels!

That was Mr. Aksler:) we used to buy tights there. They came in a small plastic container with a navy blue lid!

There is nothing quite like that Hot Snack!

Little People is where Sharon's Bakery was or perhaps one door away.
Ross Bakery was nearer to Stoke Newington.

Ross Bakery was where Buckingham or Rottenberg`s greengrocer is currently.
Where Sharons Bakery used to be is now Joseph`s silver and the shell station.
Who remembers those chocolates wrapped in a ladybird wrapper from the old Breuer and Spitzer? They were such a treat! Also Tommy bears- they came in blue and yellow packets and were delicious!

Mrs Leah Jacobowitz had bought off Russell's Lingerie Shop and eventually relocated to Tulips, where Smada Nassim (daughter of Moses Supermarket) sold clothes . |
And then she went on to be the headmistress of Satmar senior school!!

I am almost very sure that Sharons was the very last shop on that row.
Remember Moses supermarket? Mr Moses was the father of the woman (can't recall her name - was it Sharon????) who owned Sharons. He ran the supermarket with his sons. Or maybe the sons ran the bakery too. They were an Adeni family who actually lived in Hendon or GG.
Once, when I was very young, I was sent to buy some baked beans from Moses supermarket. I picked up a can and went to pay, to be informed by Mr Moses that my family did not eat that hechsher.

Monks had these two sweet older ladies who would smile at me as a kid, and prod me to taste a strawberry or grape when I went along with my mother sweet memories.
Yes, it was exactly where the solicitor's place is now.

Before that, there was a womans clothing shop called Classic Collections.
Does anyone remember Russell's on Amhurst Parade? It was a lingerie shop. |
It was called 'Hebrew book and gift Centre.' Not such a memorable name.
Don't remember the lingerie shop. I probably wasn't buying lingerie yet; or wasn't born yet at the time

Ross Bakery
Safeway Savers
Netto
Teddy Bear
Woolworths (not in Stamford Hill proper but still...)
British Home Stores in Wood Green...
anything else? |
I remember when Netto opened. I was probably around 7 or 8-- and for months, maybe a year there was this huge sign that said 'Netto shopping village coming soon'. I passed it every day on the way to school, and my sisters and I used to chant the words on the sign whenever we passed. We were so excited for it to open
In the end it was not very exciting. Except perhaps for the shop 'Me and my baby' which was full of interesting shmontzes and bits.

I thought Hebrew Book And Gift Centre was the one owned by the now late Mr Hochhauser, the shop moved from Cazenove Road to Amhurst Parade; I'm pretty sure Shloimy's Judaica used to be The Gift Centre owned by the Frischmans.
