How do you know it’s not Hindel = Hindy?

Sometimes it is. So you dont "know". You'd need to ask to know.

HINDEL DOES NOT MEAN CHICKEN!!!

It is the Yiddish version of Chana.

I named my daughter Chana after a Hendel, I think Hindel is a different name. Ayala, as everyone says.

I had an aunt named Hinda. When she was in an Israeli school in the 40s they Hebraized her name to Ofra. Which means deer

R kanievsky said that Ayala is translated in Hebrew from hinda and paskened we should add the name Ayala since hinda was extremely rare in Israel 20 years ago

Didn't read through whole thread...
But if my name was Hinda I'd rather be named after a graceful doe than a squawking chicken!

Faige = Tzipora, the wife of Moshe Rabbeneinu.
Devora - one of the greatest neviot. Also the nurse maid of Rivka Imeinu.
Ze'ev - associated with shevet Binyamin since the bracha given to him by Ya'akov Avinu.

They all have much wider associations than the animal with which they are associated.
On the other hand, the only Jewish associations that I can think of for chickens, are soup!

And here I thought this PSA would be to warn parents that if you name your kid Ayala, she's going to be one of three in her class. Make sure the name works as a first name-last name combo because that's probably what she'll be called.

(I say this as someone with a daughter named Ayala. No regrets.)

My DD is the only Ayala in her class but each of my girls has at least one Ayala in their class, so it's definitely popular.

Should we now discuss how to pronounce the name? Very Happy
If you ask my daughter what her name is in English, she says it a-YA-la
If you say איך קוראים לך? she says it aya-LA

Opinions please!! I’m expecting a girl BH and love the name Ayala, but we already have a Yael/Yaeli, are they too similar in sound?

Yes they are very similar . I would not do that . I like atara or Aviva much better anyway . And they both have beautiful meanings. Crown and spring .

Oy, all of you bemoaning the fact that you’re “named after a chicken,”” (or not, or don’t want to be) you’re not! You’re named after a family member your parents presumably loved very much, or at least wanted to accord them the respect and zechus of being named after. Can’t you just look at it that way?

By the way, just to make things more interesting, Hendel is a last name too.

Thanks. That's my gut feeling but I love the name, oh well. I have an Adina too (we're a mostly girly family!) so Aviva is a little too similar-sounding for my liking and Atara is not one of my favorites.
