Did you see the article? The pictures? The food? A 10-12 year old buying a meat sandwich and fries. How do these children come with Money for food? Aren't parents paying for camp and food? Have nosh and drinks. even that is alot. Why are parents putting more money out for these extra meals? I could understand if their bunk ''won'' a special meal but where does this end?? Yes they can do what they want with their money. My opinion is nip this in the bud now!.

Sounds weird. A canteen (should) have drinks, ices, snacks. Meals are already provided by the camp.

I think it's on the camp more then on the parents. When I was in camp the canteen sold ices, maybe snacks and some drinks. These days they look more like take out places/ grocery stores then the good old fashioned canteens I remember.

I sent my son to camp and the food was far from plenty, really karg, but they sold food in the canteen for really expensive. It got me so angry that I was paying full price for an expensive camp and they were karg with their food and then had the chutzpah to sell hot food in the canteen.
My daughters camp on the other hand, has amazing and plentiful food! They also sell some hot foot in the canteen but I don't think it's a big deal because the campers aren't hungry from not having enough food, if they buy it's for a snack.

My DH was in camp many years ago. It was Iced tea, or drinks, nosh that they bought. What about the kids who's parent's don't have? Why can't they make camp fun without these extra's? If it's for the counselor and heads who are older. But a 10 year old buying these meat sandwiches?

I read the article and was already imagining all the letters complaining.
The complaints might be valid I don't have kids going to camp yet. But definitely found the article interesting and different to read.

It is a business. This is on the camps.
In girls camp canteen is more like nosh and ice cream style. It's not an alternative to the meals.

I read this and really didn't understand it. Don't the camps supply meals?? So why would you need to buy a burger and fries as a snack?

Ugh the things they described are things I would rarely buy as an adult because of the expensive tag. I don't get this generations

I would love to see canteen selling fresh fruit, cut veggies, salads, fruit smoothies, hard boiled eggs, avocado salad, hummus, things like that. Even better would be if camps actually fed our children wholesome foods.

Parents are paying top dollar for camp. The food is not edible? 300 kids in camp and the food is not tasty and no complaints? Camp is $ 8000 to $10.000 for 2 months. Plus new clothing, shoes, sneakers, misc. plus add more money for the canteen. (child is age 10.)

My sons are in camp.
The food is good and generous. And I sent them up with some nosh.
But also supper is at 6. At midnight, when night activity is over, they're really hungry. (Teenage boys).
So yeah, they could go to their bunks and eat their way through an entire bag of chips.
Or occasionally as a treat, they can buy themselves a burger or pastrami sandwich.
Not every night, but personally I prefer the real food rather than a case of cookies.

If course there are boys who buy every night. The same way there are kids who get ice cream or sushi every night.
But in my boys camps (2 Lakewood yeshiva Mesivta camps) the average is 1 1/2 sandwiches a week.

I understand about Teens. A 10 year old should not be up at midnight.

I was also disturbed by that article. The amount I spent on my kids to go to sleepaway camp is not normal by the time I’m done with camp tuition, shopping, nosh, tips, canteen etc.
It seems so wrong to add this ridiculous pressure to the kids (and parents) to spend additional money on takeout food. Not to mention the inevitable kids who won’t be able to afford it and end up feeling deprived.
