I don't know who hugged you, I just think it's not nice to anonymously accuse users here of being empty shells of a human. You don't know them and that's a harsh thing to say. To the people who ruin every family outing by relentlessly trying to get their kids to pose in the perfect position, or who let their cappuccino get cold while they snap the most symmetrical shot of it, that's a little sad. But there are plenty of "influencers" who are sharing useful recipes, cool hobbies, and interesting content. I don't think you can paint them all with the same brush.

I don't know anyone personally and I'm not accusing anyone personally. All I'm saying is that the entire job description and definition of an "influencer" is superficial and anti Torah values, which is pretty self explanatory.

Exactly why individual people decide to sell themselves for attention is their own cheshbon.

In general you will notice that SM pages that stick to the topic they were opened for (granted that the influencer is an expert on the topic) and almost obsessively don't post any other content are usually more wholesome and meaningful. The pages that are potentially more toxic are those that have a specific goal but branch out and display other things too.

I think this says it all. If you have something specific that you are passionate about and that's why you opened your blog/insta, then awesome! You're probably helping the world. Otherwise, I don't see why we should be interested in any of these peoples' lives. The question is, what is it about her that I'd like to be influenced by her?

They are a bunch of show offs. Why did it become ok to just outright brag and show off? Use and manipulate your kids like puppets. It’s sick.

Not at all. Influencing is probably a female dominated field. It’s not a position like a politician, judge, lawyer.

There are male influencers too. But I think the females get hate partially due to jealousy and misogyny.

Why misogyny? We are women so makes no sense
It’s not like people are saying oh we only like male influencers people are saying they don’t like any etc there’s no gender issue here it’s about the genre
Is it racist if they are all of one color um nope again about content and genre

Certain female influencers don’t get hate. I won’t name names but it’s the ones who are genuine, authentic, not constantly perfectly dressed and made up, relatable, and offer useful content.

Nah, the men are even worse. Nothing worse than male narcissism with a worldwide platform.

Because it's easier to cry misogyny than to actually think about what it means to be an influencer or to be obsessed with them.

I agree.

And yet, this is how marketing has evolved.

So, 20 years ago, a woman who creates and sells custom cookies would purchase ads to promote her business.

If she was very marketing savvy, she may create a Cooke Night Out, give out free samples at local events, partner with a grape juice and basket company to make Mishloach Manos, and advertise that before Purim.

Today, showing the personality and behind-the-scenes stuff has become a necessary aspect to marketing in many genres.

Coca Cola shows behind the scenes footage, the staff speaks directly to their target audience in ways that were unheard of a few years ago.

So, today, the woman creating custom cookies realizes that if she shows her personality, clips of how she makes the cookies and decides which flavors to make, etc, her marketing will be far more effective than simply hiring a graphic designer to create flyers for her business, and posting those ads, and nothing else.

It’s a slippery slope.

She starts sharing unboxings of cookie ingredient deliveries.

A measuring soon company offers her free products to promote their products, and they want it to be filmed in her family’s kitchen (not her commercial kitchen) to show authenticity.

She notices that when she posts about personal topics, her likes and follower count go way up.

She’s a sweet frum women trying to pay her bills, pay for her kids’ camp, move to a better neighborhood, and the more she shares, the more her business expands.

Or it’s easy to bash and feel superior to another woman and make yourself feel that you’re better than them even though secretly you would like the attention and free things.

You're right in that everyone wants free things (attention on the other hand, is not something I believe everyone wants).
However, nothing in life is free. What are people willing to give up for their "free" products? Their privacy? their family's privacy? their dignity? It's really a choice: am I willing to sell my soul? How much is it worth?

Bet you’re an influencer because literally no one else wants that attention or free stuff. Or else they’d do it too.

What’s it they say? If something is free then you’re the product

What bothers me most is that it's all about gashmius.
Like, what are we really in this world for? To see the latest cute clothes for your kids, how to plan the best vacations, most natural wigs, modeling for photoshoots....??

Some influencers pages have tochen and meaning. Others are just so empty. It's sad to see 40 year old women who's lives revolve around such emptiness. And don't tell me it's just a job. It is not. It takes over your entire life - you become busy with and obsessed with all things olam hazeh.

I want to focus my life on more meaningful things and being surrounded by SM makes it so much harder to remember why we are on this earth.

As frum yidden I feel like we should be living so much higher.

One instagrammer recently posted a picture of her siddur and wrote that she said hallel bec it was Rosh Chodesh. Do you know what? I actually got out my siddur and said mussaf and hallel because I was inspired by her post.

The trick to enjoying social media and not letting it control you is to take everything with a grain of salt. I have learning a lot from parenting accounts, I enjoy following the cooking influencers because I enjoy their recipes. The issue is when ppl take everything from influencers at face value. Influencers only show us a drop of their lives, so assuming things about them from what you see is ridiculous.

Plus, a lot of influencers overshare and it is vomit inducing imo...

Last thing and the worst is the influencers who use their kids as content. It's not ok that I, a stranger, know your kid's names, their hobbies and some of them even the school they go to. Not only are they making a digital footprint without proper consent, and not only are there crazy ppl out there who can be dangerous for your kids but its not normal that I see a kid in the street and can name them!

Normal healthy people don’t want that kind of attention.

Never got this mentality. There's nothing wrong with being "anti" something and it doesn't mean that I have secret feelings about it either.

Say I openly bash the idea of same s-x marriages. Am I jealous? Do I wish I was lesbi@n?
