Are you sure it wasn’t just an authorization? When you don’t say an exact amount most gas stations will get an authorization from the bank for a max number and then only actually charge the card for the right amount. The larger amount will still show as pending when you log into your online banking for a few days.
I had a different issue with that same gas station a few times. I told them to put $30 in and they just filled up the tank.

All gas stations put a $99 temporary charge on ur card to make sure it works. It is reversed automatically right after

Never had that! We get a $1 hold each gas purchase.
