Can't deactivate or delete Facebook account

For a few years now I have kept my Facebook account in deactivation mode, logging in occasionally for specific needs and deactivating again instead of just logging out. I have done this for privacy reasons and as a psychological deterrent to overuse.

A few weeks ago, I found that the deactivate and delete options simply disappeared from the menu -- at least, for me. The options are no longer present on the page where they always were, and I have scoured every other sub-menu and can find no possible way of deactivating or deleting my account.

Has anyone else encountered this? Any idea what to do? I of course have sent complaints/requests for help via the channels provided but FB is famous for not responding and I have indeed received no response.
