In a small school, understaffed, teachers in grades pre-k until 7th grade (ages 4-14) leave their class sometimes for varies small reasons reasons.
The older teachers usually go out during recess and davening and they leave the door wide open.

I work in one of the younger grades and I'm curious if it's OK to leave my classroom alone. The secretary is on maternity leave. The reading specialist is helping out a little . But it's not her job!

There are under 15 kids per class. Would it be OK to walk to the next door class when I need help or walk a sick child to the office?

What ages would you leave your students alone

Not before middle school age
If you wouldn't allow a child that age to babysit or be home alone then you shouldn't be leaving the class alone

No do not leave them. Call the office to come get the sick kid. Do not go next door get everything before class.

I don't see the big deal about leaving the classroom for afew moments. Not a pre school classroom, but older kids? I don't see what the big deal is.

How far are you going? Can you see the class if you leave the door open? How long are we talking? Under 60 seconds is probably ok. More than that, I don’t think you should.

You need to ask administration what the policy is. In my school we aren't allowed to leave any kids of any age for a moment. Not even to talk to someone privately in the hallway.
