What’s the range of application fees to ey and local sems , are they non-refundable if you don’t get accepted/don’t go?

My daughter is in seminary now so we applied last year. Her application fees were $200/each and completely nonrefundable. So in theory, if she did not get an interview, we would still not get the money back, and if she did not get an acceptance, we also did not get the money back.

In the middle, more middle of the road (peninim, tomer devorah, darchei binah, MMY, all were $200. There is a whole list of seminaries who are part of the joint seminary application and these three were part of that that application includes modern orthodox as well.) My daughter went to a BY high school, and her friends applications were all around the same price, and they were all very much BY sems.

There's one joint seminary application? Hope it includes many sems cause this fee is absurd

There are about 20ish sems who participate in the joint application. But the $200 fee is for each one you send it to. So my daughter applied to two, we paid $400.

It does seem like a lot, but remember that someone will review the application, talk to the girl's principal, and maybe other references, and travel from Israel to do an interview. Not to mention all the other recruiting costs. The applicants who are rejected right away end up costing less to process, and the ones who get accepted might just cover their costs.
The application fee also serves as a deterrent, to keep someone from applying to 25 places, just to be sure.
I don't know as much about seminaries, but I know that yeshivas will not encourage an application from someone they don't think is a good fit. There's no joy in rejecting a kid. Better to have students apply to the right place and get in happily.
