My son (9) started complaining of headaches yesterday. He later threw up and has been sleeping a lot, which is very unusual for him. Today gave him tylenol, felt better, even ate, but felt weak. Threw up again later.
I'm assuming it's a virus. But how do I know he isn't dehydrated? He was out walking in the heat before this started, without eating/drinking much.

He needs liquid regardless. Powerade.

Yes, but not often. First time was dark, after that he says normal. And of course we keep reminding him to drink in between..

He has to drink something with electrolytes like Gatorade or Pedialyte. Water won't help for dehydration.

Ok thanks. I was just nervous he didnt reach the point of dehydration where drinking wont help. He looks so pale and weak.

We did that, but he threw up right after. He is nauseous. So for now all we keep pushing is water..

My dr told me 1 tsp of pedialyte or powerade is better than 1/2 c of water. 1 tsp every half hr

If he continues this way, you should bring him to the ER for IV fluids. They can also give him Zofran to prevent vomiting.

Put a pinch of sugar or salt in the water.

Turns out it is a virus. My next child is having the same thing. Crazy headache, stomach ache, vomitting, and sleeping the rest of the time.
