So they wear swim dresses because neighbors can see them, yet they're expected to strip and change in the open? That's hypocritical.
OP, maybe talk to the director, ask if your daughter can get permission to change in the bathroom when they get back to camp. Get her a terry robe to wear till they get back to camp.

I don't know why the whole situation is really getting to me. I guess I just feel so bad for my daughter . Shes so little ( she just turned 7 a week ago!!!) And I feel like director shouldnt have been so mean about this. My daughter cried again this morning that she's never going swimming again. She was really embarrassed by yesterday. Everyone had changed in the backyard. She was the only one who refused to. |
Honestly the director sounds like a moron.
I think you might need a new camp

OP, I would ask the director to bring this issue to her rav, and if she won't, ask yours and bring her the answer. I'd love to see what he says about 6 and 7 year olds changing outside in a backyard, vs putting on terry robes for the bus. Which literally every other camp that travels to swim does unless there are locker rooms. "Tznius changing", as has been discussed here, really only applies when you're among girls. And definitely not when people can see from upstairs windows.

Your poor daughter, this is so not fair to her!! She is saying “I’m uncomfortable” and the camp director is telling her “get over it.” I would stand up for her, and tell the camp director that, since there is no place for her to change appropriately, she will change when she gets back to camp.
My 6 year old has an impossible time getting into pajamas after a bath, and that’s when she’s not wearing anything!! I can’t imagine her having to figure out how to get dressed while still wearing wet swim stuff.
I also agree with others who said this is a certainly not a life skill. A life skill is something you will need to do regularly- learn to do laundry, learn to dress yourself, learn to cook….Learning how to get undressed and dressed in a public area is not a life skill. Especially when the camp is insisting on the girls wearing a swim dress because others can see. Rather than reprimanding your daughter, the camp director should help her to come up with a solution that she is comfortable with.
(Out of curiosity how old is this camp director?)

Seriously my heart breaks for her. Summer camp is supposed to be fun and swimming is part of that. A 7 year old often needs help getting dressed even without the pressure to do it covered and fast forget wet swim suits. Ugh. So frustrating for her.
