Soaking beans and barley

Curious - does everyone soak barley?

What about beans?

If you are putting just a 1/4 cup of barley in soup do you wash it?

I find it annoying to wash as they get all over and drip through the sieve. Any tips?

I soak the beans overnight (15 hours). It really helps with the stomach.
No soaking for barley.

I soak beans, with a little bit of baking soda which helps break down the chemicals that cause gassiness.

Barley requires no soaking, but all grains require washing to remove residual dirt, pesticides and other material you don't want to know about. They do, after all, grows outdoors from the ground. As I once said to a non jewish coworker, " For being kosher I wash my rice," to which she retorted "For being clean I wash my rice."

These days I soak both per the Star K as they are both infested. I’ve personally found bugs following their method.

I use a rice strainer which has very small holes that doesn't allow small pieces through.
