Can you have a blood draw done to see the bilirubin levels tomorrow and then if they are possibly too high, again on Friday to see if they're dropping?

My husband is a mohel and I have never heard him suggest this. Ever. But to be honest I’m more concerned that the mohel would answer with such a retort “who’s doing the bris? Me or him” I would run and find a new mohel.

You need to decide if you trust him or not
If you want him to do the bris then please trust him and follow his advice or find somebody you trust

This exactly. A mohel needs to know his place. He can do a bris. That's it. He doesn't have a medical degree in pediatrics and should not be advising on feeding (and certainly not contradicting a pediatrician).

Many mohel's are more knowledgeable about newborns than doctors are. A medical degree doesn't automatically make one competent.

I am as anti the militant breastfeeders as you can find but this sounds ridiculous to me. If the bris needs to be late it needs to be late. I wouldn’t supplement with formula just for the sake of having the bris on time, if otherwise you would want to exclusively breastfeed.

Skin to skin, which is achieved by breastfeeding, helps, too.

For example, this. Skin to skin is very easily achieved without breastfeeding.

I think this is the bottom line. If you trust this Mohel, go with his advice. Is this your first? Are you an experienced mother? There are a lot of factors here which we don't know anything about. Our Mohel was amazing, giving us a lot of tips and advice. But was always very pleasant and explained everything until we were comfortable.

So don't agree with this logic.

There is something to this, it was suggested to me too years ago when one of my kids had a high bilirubin number. Per a quick Google search, jaundice does clear up faster in formula fed babies.

Certain types of jaundice do. It depends what the cause is.

But my dr told me jaundice is not a reason to introduce formula. And yes, I trust the pediatrician over the mohel when it comes to medical advise.

I meant that when you breastfeed you automatically achieve skin to skin.
Not that you can't do skin to skin without... (dh does skin to skin in the delivery room, after patiently waiting for me to Give up my skin to skin time)

I strongly disagree. A mohel takes a training course in performing a bris. As part of the course they learn a bit about newborns. Most of the course is focused on the actual procedure and aftercare.

A pediatrician spends years doing a pediatric residency. There is no question that they are way more competent than a mohel. It doesn't make sense to me how anyone could even think otherwise.

I mean, maybe you should take your babies for well visits to a mohel if they are so competent

The question is not really supplement with formula or exclusively breastfeed. The mohel is saying (unartfully) that if you exclusively breastfeed, the baby may need to have a late bris because he won’t be ready by the 8th day. And this is fine! Go with your gut, talk to another mohel, talk to a lactation consultant, talk to your doctor. You can exclusively breastfeed and have a late bris (if necessary) when your infant is ready. Don’t let this guy bully you. Mazal tov!!

Also if I recall correctly, sunlight is good for jaundice too. My oldest had it and our pediatrician told me to lay him naked next to a window to get sunlight.

2 hospitals + pediatrician + mohel told me to supplement with bottles so the baby gets the bili out.

Actually maybe the mohel said sugar bottle? Either way, it is standard protocol to recommend.

(Coombs positive baby)

That was your experience. OP specifically said that her pediatrician said not to supplement.

Her pediatrician actually said that if the baby looks yellow by Friday, she should give formula.

So you think every doctor out there is competent and anyone that is not a doctor doesn't know much, even if they're very experienced??
It's scary to think that a medical degree automatically means that a doctor is competent. My daughter probably wouldn't have been alive had I listened to my pediatricians advice.
Many many experienced moms are more competent than many pediatricians. Many mohel's are very knowledgeable and competent when it comes to certain issues.

I love this thread. Pitting the militant breastfeeders against the “medical doctors are always wrong” crowd.

I wouldn't use a mohel, or a doctor, or any professional for that matter who would "tell" me that I MUST do something I am not comfortable just because they said it, and then get angry if you hesitate or get another opinion that says otherwise. With all due respect to his (assumed) knowledge and experiences, most things are not black and white and a good professional will respect you as the parent of the child and explain the options and consequences of each choice, make their recommendation and answer opposing opinions professionally, with facts and certainly without getting angry.
Do listen to what professionals have to say, but do not let yourself be bullied into doing something you are uncomfortable with.
