I can actually post here, yay me!!
I got a job to teach conversational english to satmar high school girls. The principal wants me to bring in a picture and then we discuss the picture and things like that. Well, I have some ideas, like, family, shopping, the weather. Anybody have any other ideas or tips? TIA
She doesn't want anyone to know that I know any spanish, which is very little anyway.
She is not making me wear a sheitel though Very Happy , I can wear my hats.

Mazal Tov and Hatzlacha Rabba - what about cities - like if they were to go on a trip could they discuss that (maybe natural type pics - an igloo, the grand Canyon, etc...)

I assume it is so that they can learn English by immersion and not rely on communicating is Spanish with the English teacher.

right!
the girls only speak spanish. they don't even know yiddish, they have a class like that too. it's because most of them are sefardim, but satmar.

-bring a picture or object in, discuss it, can be great if you went on a vacation and brought back a bunch of little things from places you visited... students can do the same
-"debate" an issue of current events
-procedural- give directions to do something- crafts, build something, a recipe, have students do the same
-games- charades, scattergories, matching, bingo... (with english names of course)

That's all I can think of now...

yay, I got another job!! Also conversational speaking w/ a married non-jewish guy who deals w/ english speaking pple for business and needs help w/ his english. I'm first starting on a trial basis to see if he's happy w/ me and if I'm comfortable teaching him.

MamaBear, I just noticed your post and probably some of your neighbors from BA have relatives in the school I teach in, if they're Satmar.

mazel tov! It's wonderful to have a set teaching gig. I couldn't secure a full time teaching position so I am subbing this year (high school and junior high level). It's a lot more relaxing when you can plan your own curriculum and the class builds up a repertoire with you over the semester. Good luck and enjoy!
