BH I make that much - but I have been working for 25 years in computers.

But also I hear that starting salaries for hitech/time motion / industry are pretty good today. NOT in Jerusaelm, though, you have to go to Lod/TA/Herzelia areas to get a better salary.

What does your DH do ?

Is that $30K before or after taxes?
Are you trying to figure out how much you need to live here? If so, I would suggest setting a shekel amount, not dollar amount, because of the volatility of that currency. Just ask people who live here and rely on dollars for their livelihood....

I would say in addition to that Tamiri that she should think in terms of monthly amounts rather than annual amounts - I don't know any company here who quotes an annual salary.

I assume you mean after taxes?

Computer programmer, like ppl said. Technical writer. Some medical professionals (family dr. working for a kupah might make less, private specialist might make a lot more). Psychologist. Lawyer. Engineer. Owner of a successful business.

Pretty much all of the same jobs that make a good living in the states, really.

What exactly is a technical writer??

And yes, after taxes.

Ora- your comment about the same jobs making the same money (as in good pay) cant be true. My husband here is a contractor, has his own business, has the potential to make more money with it if he put time into it but in EY noone even needs him.

That's because "kablanim" (contractors) are a dime a dozen here, not because it's not a good job.

As has been said, break it down into a monthly amount. $30,000 is $2,500/month. There are definitely jobs out there.

Tech writers write documents in English explaining technical things to laypeople. So for example a tech writer I know works for a big company doing write ups of the new products (computer stuff), revising, editing, etc. It's a very demanding and increasingly competitive job, but can be a great option for English speakers who are good at writing. You don't need a degree to start in the field, a 4/5 month very part-time course is enough. OTOH having a degree in English, computers, or some type of science very much helps in getting the good tech writing jobs.

As for the second part--what Marion said. The same jobs are good in America and Israel. That doesn't mean that a particular person will be able to keep the same job and make the same amount in both countries. Immigrating always means rebuilding your career to a certain extent. I imagine it's harder for business owners than for others. If your husband were to succeed in building a successful contracting business here he would make good money for sure, but as Marion said it's a competitive field.

A good 1)plumber 2)electrician 3)carpenter can make that easily.

What are we talking, NIS 10,000 a month?? Lots of people make that...a graduate social worker after a few years, school principal, teacher on two jobs, not to speak of the high tech people, a really good graphic artist, psychologist, physiotherapist, designer, top not seamstress, you name it.

Most of us didn't think in terms of those professions and don't want to work that hard to make such money...because it requires tons of hours, you want to make that as a plumber? Be ready to work until 11 at night at someone's home emergency...do you really want to do that? I could make a lot more if I would be willing to work "off hours" and to be on call for night emergencies...but I'm just to old for that already...I could probably get paid for running around the country to lecture about techniques working with young adults, but again, who has the strength.

If you want to work hard and long hours and are versatile and have a decent profession. and marketable skills....you can make money.

WOW RivkiA, I could have asked the same question...
I was now in Israel for Pesach and was talking to a few friends about this specifically.
I think you really need to look for a job outside of Yerushalaim to earn enough to cover your month and not be overdraft and I know, you probably only want to stay in Yerushalaim cos it is nice, the weather, the people, the atmosphere... There is nothing like Yerushalaim.
Also I noticed that things, basic things, such as shampoo, tissues, washing powder, milk...etc is quite expensive compare to other countries.
So you can have a good salary, but that is all relative, is $30.000 enough?
My question is how much do you need after taxes to cover your month confortably with no minus? (not talking about luxury here)

just to add to ora_43,
I actually used to be a tech writer, stopped when last db was born.
it makes between 10-16,000 shekels a month- depending on where you work and if you have additional responsibility. I took a course and interned for 4 months, and it worked out really great. it is competitive but there is definitely a need.

what kind of job is he in?

pm if you want more info.

good luck.

chumous- he is a contractor (runs the business, hires others for dirty work) and he is a warehouse manager for a linens supply company.

I'd be interested to hear about the techwriter job for me, but my husband would never allow me to do it if for those 4-5 months I wasnt getting paid anything.

Contractors make very good money. I would say more than hi tec. You just have to know how to get in and get started with the minimum overhead. You have to be prepared. I would definitely be in touch with the sochnut and get in their chonchut program. I know quite a few contractors. The set up is different here. What kind of work does he do? I have seen a number of US contractors get stuck in the Anglo marketplace because of how they do things. There are many small jobs where an American will bring in a professional and most Israelis will do it themselves.

Technical writing (I have done it) can entail a lot of traveling, some translation and interviewing of clients/reading documents in Hebrew. Those with tech backgrounds are preferred.

Editing/translating pays less but is easier to get into.

Our store makes us more than that and mefarnesses ds and another worker.
