In the future if something like this happens, one strategy is to "waste" a turn by trying multiple letters at once! Ex. you can play "FILMS" or something which will tell you in 1 turn whether f _ _ _ _, m _ _ _ _, l _ _ _ _, s _ _ _ _, is the answer.
