Mayonnaise or aioli?

On Friday I went I to a shop that I don't normally go to. I brought a dip called pesto aioli, mainly because it sounded interesting. It was good, and if I am near that shop I would probably buy it again, but it tastes similar to other mayonnaise based dips. Is there really a difference between aioli and mayonnaise? I know there should be according to traditional recipes, but in the world of Jewish dips, are they interchangeable?

Someone gave me a recipe once for cumin aioli, and the process was the exact same as regular mayo, but with cumin in it, too. So I'd vote for interchangeable.

aioli has garlic, it literally has "garlic" (ajo, aglio, ail) in its name
regular mayonnaise has no garlic

Oh you're right! The cumin aioli had crushed garlic, too, I think. So that's what makes it aioli?

Yes.
Classical aioli has just garlic (plus eggs, oil, salt, maybe pepper, maybe lemon), no other ingredients...
So "Cumin aioli" is really not aioli

Well pesto has garlic in it anyway, so I think they might have just been using a more interesting name.

Aioli and mayonnaise are both creamy emulsions - aioli is made from garlic and olive oil while mayo is made from eggs and vegetable oil. Though these days, people seem to just mix mayo and garlic.

Pesto contains pine nuts or walnuts.

Home made mayonnaise for Pesach: if you use garlic for Pesach its comes out delicious (as I don't use mustard)
