The outline of this section included the resolution of this crisis, but when I was writing it out it was taking a long time and turned out to be fairly long too. So I ended up splitting it.

I’ll try to work on the rest soon!

NEXT TIME

"Chava, tell me what happened!" Eli repeats frantically.

He doesn't give her a chance to answer, though, getting a cold pack for her eye and making sure that her nose isn't broken.

Chava herself is remarkably calm. She cooperates without protest.

When the bleeding stops to Eli's satisfaction, she explains.

"You know the guards only let us have 20 minutes. But this girl I was taking, it turns out that she has a water phobia. She was really scared to go in. I told her not to worry, that she could take her time, I offered to take off my socks and go down the steps with her if that made her more comfortable.

"She finally managed to toivel, but she was shaking the whole time. I felt so bad.

"Of course it took much longer than 20 minutes.

"When we came out, the guard was really angry. He started yelling at us for abusing the privilege, and threatening never to let anyone use the mikvah.

"I tried to apologize to defuse the situation, but apparently that was the wrong thing to do.

"Without any warning, he punched me in the face. I screamed, the other girl screamed, and another guard came running. He asked if I'm okay. Then he sent the other guard to take a walk outside, and brought us both back to our apartments."

"Was this second guard black by any chance?"

"Yes he was, why?"

"I figured. It's not important right now. But Chava, why on earth didn't you use the alert bracelet?"

"It all happened too fast. By the time I could have pressed it, the whole thing was over. It wasn't even on, remember?"

"Not very helpful then."

"I know, but next time I could—"

Eli stands up. "What are you talking about? There will be no next time!"

Chava stares at him. "Eli, what are YOU talking about? Of course there will be. There's nobody else that can do it."

"You can't put yourself in danger!"

"Yes I can, for something important."

"No you cannot! I am your husband!"

"And I am your wife. But I am making a unilateral decision here. We got married on this principle. Women have chopped ice and gone to the Mikvah in a Siberian river. I'm willing to risk a black eye for the mitzvah."

Eli puts his head in his hands.

Finally he looks up. "You win. But I expect you to make me sandwiches this week."

"Sandwiches?" Chava is confused.

"With three kinds of chocolate spread."

is there a kind soul who can find the "episode" which describes exactly how this living situation came to be? I know it was an experiment of isolating people from the rest of the world but I'd like to reread the details. And I don't have the time to look through 16 pages for it.
