From my experience - the average amount is $150 for a couple unless they are your very close friends.

I agree with koolmother

[/quote]I decided not to give money but to actually get a gift and something that everyone apreciates and can be used for th enext 30 years is silver. and it never looses its value and you can get something for $ 30 or for $500 its up to you to decide how much you want to spend and how close you feel to the couple.
I get a salt holder that they can use on shabbos and they start from about $30. so far the most I spent was $70 on a close cousin and silver has a value so its always nice and also I think every time they use it they will think oh so and so gave it to us as opposed to money it just comes and goes and in 10 years they will never say oh this we bought with so and so's wedding money gift.

thats why I decided to stick with a gift

Yes, Lubavitchers do give gifts! Anywhere from $18 to thousands depending on your means and closeness to the members of the chassana.

I've received even less than $18, but it's the happy presence at the simcha, or davening from afar that matter as much or more than the gifts. Gifts are nice, of course, and much appreciated...

I didn't say we DON"T give gifts. I said the tendency is NOT to give gifts. I know we got very few, and at some point I had to call a halt to gift giving as well.

So maybe what you meant to say was that you and your friends don't give gifts. It has nothing to do with Lubavitch.

No, that's not true. I say what I see, not only what I do.

I thing the average gift is 150-180. If you buy a nice present you can get away with less but it should be given on time. I find sometimes it is hard to get it to the baal simcha so the savings is not always worth it. We just made a chasuna and it is truly amazing how many close friends did not give anything. On the other hand some gave extremely generous gifts and others really cheap ones. I have boxes in my basement of these unwanted stuff from my oder kids and it is a shame. If you can't afford a decent gift, send a nice card or donation card from a charity. These cheap ceramic stuff that no one uses will end up in some charity auction or garage sale so don't waste your money.

I got a set of Pyrex pans and bowls from a 'nebby' cousin when I got married, I laughed so hard. Today I don't laugh, it was a very valuable gift! it was also the biggest box...

I agree with some of the comments here. For a younger couple $50-$75 is very nice to give. Even $36 if you cannot afford more. If it is a close friend and you are a younger couple, go with a gift, that they can't put a price tag on, it is funny taking money from a friend of the chosson/kallah. In the middle age range I think $50-$200 depending on your capabilities and how close you are to the family. I got married less than a year ago and I got all my checks under $200 except for one very close family friend (and there were a lot of very wealthy people there).

I'm from out of town and $100 is standard there. I would assume Brooklyn is AT LEAST that much if not more.

I got alot of 18 and 36 dollar checks and I was satisfied. If I knew that people give that much I would say they are crazy!! It is my simcha why would people feel the need to give so much money inorder to come and make me feel happy? I had someone that gave us 1000 and I thought they were nuts eventhough they were able to afford it.

We are invited to ALOT of weddings - I would say about 30 over the summer. When we first got married we were giving $36 and we realized that we just can't do it. Only when my friends get married we usually get ~$100 gift (once a year).
