I followed this account on Instagram, it's a new photography account and she was doing a giveaway for a photography session if you follow.
So yesterday I checked how many followers she had because I was curious what my chances were, and it was like ~20. Then today I checked back again and it was ~600!
How did she do it? Did she buy followers? I'm just curious if those are all real people that happened to come across her account in the last 24 hours

Also quite a few of her followers look not so legit...
And she only got like 14 likes on her first post.

How did you find the account? She might have advertised. But sometimes people do buy followers.

It seems like she did, that's how I found her. its more the crazy jump that made me raise my eyebrows.... she was at like 25 followers for at least a week and then suddenly she has 600+?

Maybe I'm just naive but why?
What does it do for her if she has tons of fake followers? Like it's just numbers, not people who are gonna actually use her

Why care?
Why not wish her success?
Sometimes people think this is a way to achieve social media presence.
What is really the issue?

I don't care all that much, I'm just confused... like why run a giveaway if you were planning on buying followers in any case?

Sometimes in order to enter a giveaway you need to follow a few dif accounts- that way all the accounts offering the giveaway gain a lot of followers

Totally makes sense if she's doing a giveaway.
Giveaways can bring hundreds of followers in one day, especially if she's doing it with a bunch of other better known pages.

She advertised and made the giveaway to gain followers. People want to join the giveaway and then they share with their friends. Only those who follow her can join the giveaway. That's the point. The giveaway is to attract followers.

Yes it makes sense, that’s the whole point of giveaways- to gain followers.

As a photographer... I never bought followers so we don't all do it. I've done giveaways and never gained that many in day.

I'm a photographer and I haven't bought a single follower. I don't even know how one would do that.
I am curious to find out though, why do people care?

What kind of giveaway is it?
One just her on her own or one where you have to follow a bunch of accounts to win a wig or whatever? Because if it’s the latter it totally makes sense to gain so many in one day - and many unfollow once the giveaway is over.

I would imagine that the giveaway got her the followers. She must have promoted it and anyone who was interested probably followed her.
It seems unlikely that she would buy followers as generally people buy followers because they are trying to establish their social media presence and monetize the website as distinct from using the website to advertise their business. The more followers one has, the more one can theoretically charge for ads as it would be used as part of your marketing information to companies.

It’s not only photographers who buy followers
99% of the major influencers out there have fake followers
It’s a marketing strategy
Not the strongest marketing strategy but it helps with certain algorithms etc
Basic strategy

Do you really think 99 percent buy? I would hope not. Thats so dishonest.
