Try not to spend more than $5 per item, stores like Children's Place.

Same rule, though I can usually get even better (like $3-$4 if I shop in advance)...hardly ever go to TCP, though....Target, Baby Depot, but mainly second hand store.
Shabbos clothes, I am a bit more relaxed about the rule (e.g. I can't find any shirt for that price, and I need one, so I'll spend $6 for a good quality one...but if I can find cheaper, I do so. I have gotten amazing deals on them on ebay or what not because non-Jews might use them once and then re-sell. I've found an entire shabbos outfit, brand new with tags for 99 cents on ebay and combined it with a purim costume for another 99 cents; spent $4 in shipping...then I found the exact same shirt in long sleeves, brand new with tags, in a second hand store, for 4.99....so for 3 seasons worth of shabbos clothes I spent maybe $8: vest, long sleeve shirt, long pants, short sleeve shirt Smile)

But the key is to plan ahead if possible. I try to buy in the off season...a couple months ago I got pants and t-shirts for under $2 a piece at Target in the clearance section.

I let it go up to $12 for a top, $18 for pants, and a bit more for sweaters.
I just got my son's entire spring/summer/fall wardrobe at Gymboree. They had great sales, plus coupons. I spent a lot less than I wrote above. I was so excited! Smile

$5?? Really??

If I am lucky and I have time, and someoen to take me I try to go to bp to get clothing as it is much cheaper than I usually pay for clothing..

But pants can cost a lot with my boys, and dresses and skirts... It's hard to find ones that fit her that are tznius that are less than $18. Unless I go to BP

Why is that a non-Jewish trait? I do that, too. I sometimes sell brand new stuff, and sometimes I sell things that have been worn once.

it depends on the item.
for really gorgeous stuff, or simply irresisitblely cute, and of course for shabbos I'd spend more.
it ranges from $5 shirts (unusual for me to find tho, not a sale shopper- too stressful) to $50 for outerwear, to $65 shabbos dress for my 3 y.o.
but yet, I have also purchased a $20, a $5 great winter coat, and a shabbos dress for $10.
so go figure....

(but by nature, I am a cheap person. it hurts me to spend so much money on a child's clothing- not a question of whether I cud afford it or not- my discomfort with it has to do with the fact that children play and jump and get things dirty and ruined. I dont want to have to feel bad about an expensive outfit that gets a hole or horrible stain in it. for older children, who know to value their possessions and take care of them and have great pride in what they wear, id have less of an issue shelling out $$$ for something really niec.)

Genreal house rule: $5 weekday, $10 Shabbos $15 Yom Tov or Simcha. I shop sales at Sears/Target/Walmart and I buy a year ahead (like after Channuka I went and picked up great winter dresses and Shabbos clothes for dc!), Smae with eseasonal clothes (rain gear, snow gear, etc...)

I am not always a stickler, but I try real hard - here's one you are welcome to use: I recently discovered that in the children's dept. there are shirts/tops (for girls) which I would never put on on my daughter, however, as my dd is only 21 month( nad g'zunt) these "tops" are the perfect size dress for her!!!! the "chest" strap/line matches her waist to a "T" - htey are considerably less $$$ than size 2T dreses and more laundry friendly!

Because they don't have Shabbos every week Smile
Rarely do I buy something that doesn't get its wear out of it....shabbos clothes in particular since we don't have a large selection....those who do not have a reason to dress their kids up every week will buy for a special occasion and then sell because the next occasion warrants a different size.

Very true. I think the prices I pay for a toddler are not going to be the same I will need to when he's, say, 7...and for a girl, finding tzniusdik clothing will be more expensive as well.

boys pants size 4 and up don't go on sale so easily. unless you hapen to catch a gymboree sale for an extra 20% off and the childrens place has tznious girls skirts with an extra 15% it coud be really cheap.

I try to keep it under $7 per item. But if I find something for $2 or $3 at Childrens Place on sale, I'm thrilled. I also try to buy multiple sizes of those really cheap ones because those I usually buy off-season and I never really know what size that child will be when the season rolls around again. For shoes, coats, special etc. I would go up to $30 though.

tcp outlet stores have really good deals and combine it with a coupon I spend 5 $ per outfit. also gymboree when they have coupons and end of season sales you can get dresses for 16$ and boys pants for 8$ also costco has dresses at the holiday season that are tznious for 18$ and thay also might have 3 piece sets for 24$ old navy is very good at the end of season sales. they don't really have that many skirts but they do have cheap shirts like 1.50

I will not go over $10 per weekday outfit...and can usually stay under $15 for shabbos (although I am many times successful with wayy less)
but then again, ds is only 18 months, I'm sure it gets harder as they get older.

but for all of you with boys, pm me or check out my website....I sell pants for $12
