We have a major mosquito problem rather than ticks. We tried the organic route a few years ago and it smelled good but it was useless. Last summer when we were basically living in our backyard since we couldn't go anywhere else we tried the real chemicals and it made such a difference! YMMV with ticks so definitely ask around.

Keep your grass REALLY short. Ticks love tall grass.

There's too much native wildlife in the yard for us to use any kind of extermination or repellant. We just have to be extra careful and deal with it.

We have a terrible problem as well. How much did your mosquito service cost, please?
