Shulem can be incredibly tone deaf at times in the advice he doles out to Kive.
But in this last episode, I think he was spot on. He gave Kive that needed push to let go of Libby and make it work with Rachelli.
For all of his foibles and inappropriateness, Shulem proves to be very insightful at times, especially when it comes to other people.
I was recently rewatching an old episode from Season 2, when Lipa and Gitty consulted with Shulem about how to handle the issue with 15 year old Ruchami getting "married" to some boy off the street. Tzvi Arye also participated in this discussion, as the resident talmid Chochom sharing the halachic ramifications of the restaurant wedding. At some point, Shulem asked Tzvi Arye to leave, and then tells Lipa and Gitty that a girl doesn't run off to marry a random boy oit of nowhere. These things don't happen in a vaccum. He basically placed the blame squarely on them- the parents- for allowing their internal fight to destroy the family. They want their daughter to come home, but there's no home to come back to. Gitty tried to say that there's no connection, but Shulem was having none of it. He told her to pack up that very night and move back home with Lipa, and only then could they expect Ruchami to come home.
It struck me that his insight was so on the mark.
I have two questions about this episode:
1. Is Brizel cheesecake a real thing?
2. Did anyone else make omelets with cumin and margarina for lunch, or is it just me?🙄
I'll never be able to enjoy a slice of a cheesecake with the same carefree pleasure.
It'll always make me think of Shulem sitting at that table by himself.
In real life, esp in charedi society would Shulem and Nechama be speaking to each other?
It's so awkward that they were supposed to date, then Shulem missed the date because of his nap and his brother took him away.
Awkward for him and Nechama - and they both act as if nothing has happened. Weird.

This scenario would be awkward for anyone.
The way the men and women mingle is the one absolutely unrealistic part about Shtisel.
It started in season one, with Akiva approaching Elisheva on his own, and Shulem eating dinner with his secretary. . Akiva and Libby, although first cousins, would normally not be so chummy- and would not be seen going on the bus together (as they did the first time they went to the gallery and Libby fell asleep on his shoulder..) It is uncommon for men to address women by their first name in this community which they all do in shtisel.
And it was absolutely unrealistic and inappropriate for Shulem to ask Nechama to accompany him to the doctor.
So I watched all the episodes so far til 8 and I'm loving it although I have some gaps in the story and now I realize I must have missed an episode!!! Please someone tell me what episode kiva and rachelli get married in that's the one I missed !

Every love story line here is so unrealistic but I enjoy them anyway
I think the fly was a gift from shira levinson because he gave her the book about the insects and him letting it go was about him breaking with her.
Yossele and shira levy will definitely end up together
I hate gitty she is so controlling wow
I love toby and that episode was hilarious except how does an adult even get stuck in a car?
The whole story with ruchami is crazy she Is just nuts. How will dying by having a baby solve her pain of not having children, if she dies, she won't be raising a child either. What does she think will happen??
I really enjoyed the story of lipa getting into the show biz
And also liked how shulem got his job back although shulem I think is not a good/ nice person. He is very selfish and clueless.
I HATE that they keep killing off characters, I need some happy successful relationships here.
I loved the part where malkie gets a get and throws her husband to the gutter and you can see the conflict in gittys head. That was really genius.
Anyway, I really need to know which episode has the wedding so I can watch it!
Yes, there are only 9 episodes this season, the last one airing this Sunday. I saw a trailer but don't know where it was, basically Chanina decides he's buying a bigger apartment for his growing family and when telling Ruchami this she starts finding it difficult to breathe and collapses. I hope in the end it's just a panic attack and not really putting her in danger! But no way to know. Also Chanina's hat falls off when he bends down to help Ruchami and there's no yarmulke 😮 Oops. I also read that the wine that Nuchem drank wasn't kosher. Oops again.
Someone commented somewhere he worked for a long time right above that Brazil bakery and never heard anything about cheesecake there!

Regarding Ruchami, I think she knows she has a very small chance of surviving but it's worth it to her to risk her life on the tiny chance that she might survive and get to have a child. Without a child she sees no point in living. Besides for being nuts, she is also risking bringing a child into the world who will go through life knowing that she killed her mother...

Not only is it nuts - it's also a deeply problematic endeavor to embark on from a hashkafic and halachic POV. It's inherently un-Jewish to risk the mother's life in this way and no rav/posek would countenance it.
It seems so ridiculous to me that she backed out of the surrogacy situation because she couldn't deal with the halachic ambiguity yet she's Ok with basically committing suicide in order to try to give birth.
