Help! P-Nut butter no longer allowed in school lunches

My shul no longer allows nut products because have one allergic child (although he is very allergic). My rabbi says it is a sakana and therefore assur. I agree. Although it is a pain for me.

As far as sanwhiches go. I beat an egg fry it in a pan with salt and pepper and use that as a sandwich filling. My daughter loves it and then I do not have the issue of mayonaise which can spoil before lunch time in a child's bag.

Also my daughter's school allows the kids to bring the "add hot water noodle soups" they are great with a cheese stick or hard boiled egg to supply protein. I also allow (only once per week) her to bring "Wacky Macs". She loves them. I throw in frozen peas or broccoli florets while the noodles are boiling to up the nutritional value.

Have you tried edamame? It is soy beans. When hulled the look sort of like green lima beans. Kids love them. Boil them according to the pacage directions, salt them and put them in the fridge. They can be eaten cold right out of the tupperware, very nurticious snack.

Also toasted cheese with avacdo slices is an excellent sandwich, too.

Greenfire, I'm shocked at your insensitivity of this. Why should her kid have to DIE (Yes, peanut butter is LETHAL!!!). We're not talking a tiny stomachache. Have you heard of the child you died because the chef in the cafeteria used the wrong type of oil? Where I work in a school, there is an epipen in each class. I have three severely allergic kids in my class. Even if he just eats whatever during the day., he won't starve. He can have a good breakfast and dinner. At least he'll live till nightfall. Separating them is not a choice, because a child can have a reaction from the smell. This is really serious. Where I live we have nut free kosher bakeries and no snack is allowed in that is not nut free.

I wouldn't be so quick with the soy (endemame). The soy bean is related to the peanut and if allergic to one could also be allergic to the other.

Greenfire, I have to agree with aforementioned post, we do have to educate, people with the attitude you present. It follows the thought of "don't put a stumbling block before a blind person", allergies are not something to toy with or take lightly AT ALL!!!!!!! I ahve dealt, unfortunatly, with many parents who have this ignorant attitude, and I call it ignorant becuase if you took the time to understand/research the issue or speak with a parent of a child who has severe allergies then you would probably not have this attitude. Please, what you said was tantamount to saying, my child is more special/perfect than yours, so lets not inconvenience me/my child so yours can LIVE!!!!!!

To the OP, as already mentioned, thank you. As a mother of 2 severely allergic children and 1 severly allergic dh, your attitude and understanding makes our lives a little easier.

Please don't bash this next comment, but: if the school has opted for a nut free/penut free enviro. then unless you have confirmation of soy/sesame allergies, don't make life harder than you need to. If you know that the allergies are more wide spread, then yes, please act accordingly. For those who are going to attack, I know of the associated allergies to legumes, seeds and tree nuts (we ahve 'em all). But as a parent who is trying to accomodate, I dont feel she should create challenges for herself unnecessarily.

What do I make? tuna, salmon, deli, schnitzle, avocado, pasta salad, cheese sand., roll-up (tortillas with veggies and either deli or chese, roled and then sliced into 2" pcs), veggie stick to dip in flavored cream cheese you can pm me for recipes(or HM spinach dip), etc...

I know you mentioned that you r ds doesn't eat many of these, maybe try "hiding them", like a carrot cake with soy protein or wheat bran in it (and eggs). Or cheese muffins, etc...

This post is VERY old, but if btmommy still needs ideas, avocado is good, and also, apple spread is more nutritious than choccolate spread and even jams. When my son was a baby he used to get 2 sandwichses a day - either cream cheese, avocado, or apple spread. he's 2 1/2 now and hates bread!!! I dont know what he'll eat when he goes to cheder iyh!

Do you mean applesauce? Or is there something I've never heard of?

Always looking for more variety for my little nudniks who don't yet have a lot of teeth.

Maybe she means apple butter?

Pimento cheese spread, chicken salad (we put grape halves in it and a touch of curry), egg and olive, cream cheese, scrambled egg, Manwichs made with veggie hamburger, cream cheese and cucumber, plain cheese with veggies, portobello mushroom burger...Sorry, I know I've repeated some others' suggestions.

A big huge hug to all of you mommies who are careful for the sake of somebody else's child. My husband has a severe peanut and tree nut allergy and was hospitalized after he went into anaphylactic shock in preschool with an accidental exposure to peanut butter. (He didn't even eat any - just skin contact.) It can truly be life-threatening.

apple spread is made by landau's, it's like jam except made by apples and healthier, I guess you can only buy it in NY.

The apple butter I have is by Musselman's and it is apples, sugar, high fructose corn syrup, apple cider concentrate and spices. How is it healthy?

Thanks for all the new tips ladies. We have done a few mac and cheese and pizza bagel lunches, but my son mostly wants a bread and butter sandwich. I give him high fiber/high protein bread so I feel OK with it. He also eats carrot sticks and apple slices with lunch, so I think he's eating pretty healthy.

To her credit, the mother of the boy who has the allergies sent a list of so many safe snacks and foods - this made it much easier than trying to figure it out for myself.
