The song that yossele sings is Ochila la'El, from yom kippur davening.
It happens to be the actor who plays the rosh yeshiva, Shuli Rand, is very frum, and I would not question his authenticity. I could totally see a rosh yeshiva who knows his talmid very well saying something like what he did. He was not asking him to pasken; he was asking him to clarify a factor in the shaila whether his wife was really in a bdieved situation, trusting him to have that clarify not than any other young 20 something. Many times the wife will need to be addressed to get clarity in these types of things to determine her emotional state, but they were able to skip that because Chanina is well versed enough to understand it on his own.
Agreed, even the happy is sad. The whole thing is sad. Every single character's story.
