DS is 2 and half. He knows that when one of his toys is not working, I need to put in batteries and it works!! there's construction being done on my block and every morning on the way to playgroup there's a tractor digging there. This morning the tractor was not working. The first thing he tells was: Mommy, put batteries into the tractor it should work! he wouldnt understand as much as I explained to him that that tractor is too big for batteries but he wouldnt take no for an answer. It was the cutest conversation I had with him till we go to playgroup!

LOL!
My son is very into batteries, too.
He also tells me when something isn't working (like even an emoticon on the computer that is animated but froze for a minute) "the batteries are too weak." Kids are funny.
