If you're not concerned about MSG, here's a fancier version of onion soup mix + water:
1 large onion, sliced into rings
oil or butter
1/2 tsp flour
4-5 Tablespoons onion soup mix
4-5 cups water
Sautee onions until limp, but not burnt (duh!) Mix in flour. Add water and soup mix. Boil for 1/2 hour. Enjoy!
I once made this when I dropped my pot of soup less than an hour before Shabbos.

I like this lentil soup
1 cup and a half lentils. Let them soak for a few hours.
cut up 2 carrots and 1 onion. Fry them in oil in a large pot. Add the lentils...Add 2tb of tumeric and 1/4 cup of tomato paste. Salt and pepper to taste. Add alot of water. Cook on a high heat until it boils and a low heat for more than a hour (more like 2---sorry so approximate..it depends on how its turning out)
We really like this soup...It's my Moroccan MIL's recipe.

potato leek? There's a delicious one in the kosher palette. It's officially supposed to be blended but I've made it without blending too. It's great both ways!

Do you have beans? Barley? Mix of beans, and any veggies you have, dill, parsley, onions, potatoes, celery...anything really at all...and spice it like you want...garlic for certain, salt, tamari, ginger can be a nice addition.

You really dont have to use msg annymore, there are at least 3 brands in Israel that sell souppowder without it.
