Bshaa tova!! I have 3 year old twins
The Twin Z pillow is amazing for nursing or even just lounging, it made it super easy to feed them both with bottles, you can hold both or your husband can hold one and you hold the other.
Schedule, schedule, schedule. We got the twins on the same feeding schedule even if we woke one up to feed. Id get up, pump for 20 minutes while feeding them (husband woke up too, you need help!) every 3-4 hours but it made it so we had consistent stretches.
Coupons for diapers! You need a lot! Stock up now!

Yes, they didn’t latch well and I didn’t make enough milk so we supplemented with formula.
Do NOT feel bad if this happens. I wanted to try and give them as much breast milk as possible but it was physically hard and emotionally draining. If I had a do over I would just do formula.
Also, it allows someone to help!

This was literally me. I had one baby in the NICU who had a hard time eating due to her small weight, one baby at home, and was going back and forth. When she got home we were focusing on her eating, let alone latching.
We also were told to supplement with formula due to their weight. (Late 4 lbs and mid 5 lbs respectively, they were a month early).
When someone (a night nurse/family member) would take over the night shift I chose to sleep for those few hours instead of waking up every three hours to pump so I didn’t have that much milk but my sanity needed it...
I ended up somewhat nursing one and pumping for both while they got formula as well for the first couple of months, which is when it’s most important. Don’t feel bad about yourself if you can’t nurse both!!!

When the ultrasound showed that I had twins (fraternal boys),I was upset. I'm ashamed to admit it now, but I cried. But I got used to the idea, and now I wouldn't change it for the world. The first few months were hard, but I love having twins. You're in for a wild, wonderful ride!

Hi OP, I had twins a year ago in lakewood. Just wanted to tell you there is a twin gemach. Very sweet and helpful woman. Her name is Chumi Helman and she lives on Central somewhere for alot of things you need. Also, not sure if this is your first or not,but if you need help with your other kids, I found highschool girls to do chesed by me.
Also, there is financial help. for La Isha, baby nurse, furniture, clothing...

Wow thanks so much for this info! I did not know any of this! I’m not due for another few months but will keep this info handy! I Bh have a teenage daughter and my youngest is four so as far as childcare I will hopefully be ok... where does the financial help for La Isha and other stuff you listed come from? The gemach or is it separate?

I’m using a midwife practice near Lakewood, and while they say they do do twin pregnancy I’m a bit apprehensive. And totally overwhelmed. Where do I start? I’m 10 weeks already (was feeling mostly fine and being that I have so far Bh had uncomplicated pregnancies was not in rush to get checked out) and I have no idea what to do what to think! The midwives want me to go to a perinatal specialist in three weeks for a consult and detailed sono. I just scheduled that appointment. Anyone who delivered twins in the Lakewood area, who did you use? Any recommendations of physicians and like now what?! What to think what to do?! This is crazy! Bh in the best way! Babies were measuring to size with good heartbeats Bh! |
I don't know which midwife group you are currently using, but if you are using the midwife group at Avon by the Sea/Brick, I know they have a lot of experience with twins. I wish I could stay with that practice (I'm too high risk for midwife). If you want to stay with them, see if you can get an appointment with their collaborating OB group (Healthy Women OBGYN in Jackson/Freehold/Tinton Falls) just to meet the OBs. You will also have scans with the MFMs at Jersey Shore who are really great as well.

Thanks! They actually kind of kicked me out at 12 weeks when we found out that what the midwives thought were fraternal we’re actually mono di twins and they both have cord insertion issues. This was discovered at the mfm’s at jersey shore when I went for the first trimester scan... For now sticking with the Jersey Shore mfm as the perinatologist and using RWJ OBs for regular Ob.
The other option was to switch to RWJ’s MFM group but the travel time would be really intense...

How does that end up working? Where do you end up delivering?
Also, that does make sense that you cannot see the midwives. Typically mono-di with cord insertion issues is beyond the scope of midwives. Clinically and legally, there are a number of reasons that they are not allowed to take that on.

Oh for sure! For now if things stay as is I’ll be delivering in RWJ as typically perinatologists don’t do deliveries anyway. If an issue arises then will potentially switch to CHOP...
still have quite a way to go so things may change, I really feel like I’m learning as I go along... and I’m finding it hard in real life not being able to discuss this with anyone... so thanks everyone for your input! And for listening!
