By us, one kid got and the other didn't. He's still pretty upset about it, but being 20 yrs old and working, he can pay for it himself, if he really want it.
Plenty of adults get braces.

No way I’m getting braces, it is hideous. And I do have that one tooth that’s still out despite four years of braces.

20 yrs old isn't really an adult.
if you're married with kids I agree it's a bit late, but one of my dentists said that the just took braces off an 80 yr old who always wanted them !!!!

I would not be thrilled to go on a date with a 23 year old guy who has braces!!!!!! and what do u about wedding pics, digitally remove the braces? uh..bad timing in my opinion.

Braces on adults can cause gum problems.

Yes, we're in middles of paying $4000 for braces for one of my kids. And another one needs it too. thats life!
Oh, maybe we can go shnorring by one of the organizations that a poster so graciously provided for us in the govt aid thread??
Nah, just pull the teeth, and get her dentures, much cheaper, y'know. You gotta cut corners, and braces are a luxury.

I never thought we'd ever be able to afford braces for ONE kid, let alone three, with two more on the way to needing them. But miracles happen, and we are almost finished paying off braces for child #3. All of them needed braces, not for cosmetic reasons.
Pray on it, sister...
In Israel, they allow me about 20 monthly payments, which make it easier.
Ask about payments where you live too.

just to do the top is not good ... the bottom will push them out of whack after all that $$$ and time ... if not aligned with the top ...
yeah not everyone is so lucky to have parents pay for their braces ...
find a dental school - can be way cheaper ...

We are getting all orthodontic work done on the kids at a dental school and our care has been better than at the private dentist that the oldest child went to.

For us, $$ isn't an option, even though we can't afford braces. We will pay whatever it takes for our kids to have nice straight teeth. Even with insurance, my parents paid a fortune for me to have nice straight teeth. I started the whole braces thing at 8 yrs old. DH even paid $6000 for me to have implants done so I wouldn't have to wear dentures for the rest of my life. The dentsist was very nice & let us pay it off bit by bit.

We have dental insurance. Unfortunately dental insurance doesn't cover orthodontic work. You need "orthodontic insurance". My DHs job doesn't offer any, and when I called the insurance company to find out if we could purchase a seperate plan for the children who needed braces, I was informed that I couldn' t purchase said plan due to where I lived.
It seems that we will have to pay out of pocket. I hope that the orthodontist is willing to give us a (considerable!!) break as well as an extended payment plan, cause I don't know what else to do.

We have decent dental provided by DH's employer. It gives $1000 total for orthodontic. Well we used that up really fast on DS who had panoramic xrays ($250 each), spacers, expanders, retainers, and hasn't even reached braces yet. A retainer alone is around $300. DD will need the same, and there is already concern cause her baby teeth aren't falling out much yet. They want to check that the permanent teeth will come in OK. So even with dental insurance you are stuck paying tons out of pocket. I had not heard of orthodontic insurance and want to check that out.
