Just wondering... what was your best wedding gift (besides cash)? what did you get too much of and didn't appreciate? what would you have loved to have gotten? what did you do with the gifts you did not enjoy? would you rather have a really nice gift that you cannot return or cash for a much lesser value? did people give you bowls and bulky items when they knew you were moving out of town? how much did most people spend per couple when giving you cash? what do singles and young marrieds give?

We really liked a lot of our presents:
challah board (the first one we got)
beautiful washing cup
tablecloths
seder plate
bencher holder
various serving pieces and dishes
set of cutco knives
havdallah set
framed artwork

dno if you are counting shower gifts as well but we got basically everything we needed from linen to pots and pans to towels

things we got too much of (useful things but we did not need this many):
picture frames
challah knives
challah covers
mezuzah covers (we actually got a claf as a present-that was nice!)
cake platters

and of course we loved the cash

My brother had a lot of candlesticks, from cristal to silverlooking, and I didn´t get any at all. Wink

He also had a lot of unuseful stuff, even a sort of standing fountain with birds on the side - probably something the giver received as a gift himself, ha ha.

I had some flower-vases. One broke quite quickly.

I had a weird gift from someone on my husband´s side - seemingly a rich lady, which made the gift even more bizarre: it was two cooking porcelain plates, for the over, you know, one from her and one from her daughter, and both didn´t really look like new. Rolling Eyes
Well, I guess they were, but the bottom was brownish, while in a shop it´stotally white before use, right?
So in case of doubt (kashrus) we had to throw it away. (or give it to a non-jew cleaning lady for example).

The best thing was a challah-plate and then nice cutlery that my mother recommended me to put on our wedding list.
But that was really not the thing to do: I remember for this "list", I was supposed to go through this shop with a list of etiquettes with my name, and then the vendors would put it aside and then record it on the list. I lost a whole afternoon and ended up proposing money-tickets: people pay for it and later you decide what you buy with it in that shop.

We didn´t get that much gifts, since we didn´t have that much friends, even though a lot of young people volunteered to come and dance at the wedding, that was really nice.
Our parents ended up giving us the basics (dishes, towels, bedlinen, a kitchen...), and I had to buy myself some tablecloths and so on.

After the wedding, once we were in germany in our new still empty small appartment, a couple of friends of my husband came long and gave us a radio-cd player with a recorded chassidic music cd in it, and also a wooden table.
Till then, we had been eating on a very small sqaure table asorted to the laundry table... Wink
So that was a really useful, practical and original gift, which I definitely use till now and later. Then again, to make such a gift, you have to know what the couple needs... LOL

Really, the best gift is money. I´t´ll allways come in handy for a new couple, and is the easiest to take if the couple has to move out of the country...
