How common is it for a girl to cut her hair just before or after bat mitzva?? where does it come from?

I never heard of it as you prob mean. I think most people have their hair done or a trim to look nice.

There was this family in our school that never cut the girls' hair. Like, ever. Two weeks before their weddings they got haircuts. I think the mother had this frumkeit cult thing in her head, I don’t know of any source for it.

hmm, I have distant cousins that are similar. the girls all have long hair in braids. when the oldest hit high school, she "rebelled" and got her hair cut and styled.
dont know their reasons though...........
