Just announced that all City University of New York (CUNY) and State University of New York (SUNY) schools are switching over to online classes for the rest of the semester.
The CUNY ones are done with on campus classes starting tomorrow. The week gap is to give teachers a chance to figure out how online classes are going to work for the rest of the semester. (No clue how that's going to work with labs, etc.)

Omg, didn't hear anything from my college though, their website latest update is that we are still open.
Guess I will wait a few more hours to see if they update again.
I am getting so fed up of this

CUNY seems to still be having classes today. A lot of NY colleges are doing things differently right now. If you have a school email or alert system you can check that. I know of family members who received emails already from their schools even though the website hasn't been updated yet.

Just saw my alma mater University of Pennsylvania is also starting spring break early and asking students not to return so that the rest of the semester can be conducted virtually.

Oh joy. One of my sons is at a SUNY school. Guess I have to make a trip out to his campus to pick up all his stuff.

We run a Chabad House at one of the smaller SUNY schools. Pretty depressed about it, we will have hardly any Shabbos or Yom Tov guests for the next six months... The local Jewish community here is very small. Summer vacation is hard enough for us, this is going to be really difficult.
I was just getting myself psyched up to start Pesach preparations, but now it's going to be just us probably.

The update is only from tomorrow.
Most of my classes are online but I am waiting for an email from my college itself to update me. I guess they will be doing the same as teachers warned us it may be a possibility today in class.

First of all, as the parent of a SUNY student (at one of the bigger schools, though), thank you.
I haven't spoken to mine yet, but it looks like a lot of the off campus students are going to stay put. In fact, without on-campus support, they may need you even more.

I heard dorms are still open for now to allow people to make plans, etc so hopefully you'll have a little time to figure it out.

Check your email re dorm situation. Dorms will remain open in at least some of the SUNY schools.

We are in the same boat. Our SUNY also just closed (Not a Chabad House though)
I can't believe we won't be having Shabbos guests until end of August. We had so many programs planned.
Additionally, I feel awful for all the businesses we support to run our programs...the place we get our challahs, the small bakery for pastries, the place we get our salads and kugels, sometimes even chicken and other food. Out-of-town businesses need all the support they can get! Ours is one of their biggest regular accounts.
Also, the cleaning lady who helps us who we won't need as much. Her pay will be cut too.
But I'm also realizing that these closures of schools are for the best....this virus spreading throughout the close-knit communities would not be good at all!

On a serious note, that's a bummer. But on the plus side, think how clean and organized you can get for pesach with all the extra time. May as well make the best of it.

Not likely, my kids are in Online School so everyone is home all day every day. Getting ready for Shabbos or Yom Tov guests is the best motivator I have for having the kids pitch in extra. I still have to cook for Shabbos either way, so I don't gain much time. A few less programs won't change things too much.
We will make the best of it, the news just hit today so I'm letting myself be sad about it for now.
