How on earth did you extrapolate from this article that the virus is man-made?
If this is meant to be an example of how anti-vaxxers do their 'research' then you've failed miserably.

I've been vaccinating all of my pets for this for years now. Every vet does. I haven't seen any reports of animals dying from the vaccine, but corona virus is deadly for kittens and puppies, almost 100%.
I wasn't aware that it had jumped to humans, or if this has happened before. If you get a flu shot or a pneumonia shot, a coronavirus vaccine doesn't seem to be a much bigger deal.
It will be interesting to see if parvoviruses start showing up in humans, and where the animal jump will come from. Again, vaccinate your pets!

human parvovirus and human coronavirus has been around for a long time. parvovirus most often shows up as 5th disease, corona virus looks like the common cold. Apparently this strain is a lot more virulent.

This is the only part that concerns me:
“These studies, however, also entail biosafety and biosecurity risks, which need to be understood better.”
It's like a bad movie. Until containment protocol is 100%, there is always a minuscule risk. The question is, when does the value of research outweigh the risk? That's a question for bioethicists.

I had no idea! I suppose if they come up with a vaccine for rhinoviruses (common cold) then a universal virus vaccine won't be far behind.
In the meantime, I think I'm going to just be washing my hands really well, and trying not to touch my face.

OP, this coronavirus scare may or may not be a way of grooming the public for a new vaccine. I'm personally torn over how serious the threat actually is, I'm sure there's more to the story than the media is telling us, and I'm a vaccine skeptic. However, the fact that scientists tampered with and received a patent for, a strain of corona virus, doesn't in any way mean that corona virus is a lab made frankenstein.

I'm open to anything, but if the choice is possibly die, or get a vaccine, I'll take my chances with Big Pharma. It's our best bet at the moment, until something better and safer comes along. When that happens, sign me up!
That's just my opinion. If you don't hold that way, carry on.

Coronavirus is a type of virus, not just this specific strain.
This specific strain has not been identified in humans before now and it hasn't been named yet, so everyone is just calling it the "new coronavirus." That doesn't mean that it was man-made just because another strain was tampered with in a lab. Please.

West Nile Virus, Swine flu, Ebola, Zika, and now this... It's the same cycle over and over. Create fear. Create vaccine. Next.

Please move this to the vaccine forum (which I have blocked for my own sanity) since this another crack pot conspiracy theorist anti-vaccine thread. Thank you.

Netflix has a new documentary series called "Pandemic: How to prevent an outbreak."
I think that it would be good to watch, because it shows scientists trying to come up with a universal vaccine. It shows people admitting when they fail. It talks about the global repercussions of an outbreak. It talks about the effects on entire communities, and even entire countries.
Everyone is terrified of Ebola, but think about this - in the 1919 H1N1 outbreak, almost 100 MILLION people died. Think about that. 6 million Jews died in the Holocaust. Now imagine those numbers on a graph. ONE HUNDRED MILLION!
That's more than WWI, WW2, Korea, and Vietnam all put together. If you had a vaccine that could prevent that kind of mortality rate, wouldn't you use it?
This can happen again. Computer simulations show that if a new virus (Like the H7N9) is introduced in NYC, the entire city could be incapacitated within a week. What do you do if everyone is too sick to come to work at the electric and power plants? Not to mention the second hand consequences, like rioting and looting.
By the end of the month, the entire US would be infected, with no state spared except maybe Alaska and Hawaii. All planes would have to be grounded, so no coming in or going out. Within 2 months, the entire world will be infected.
Mortality rates can be as high as 60% if the symptoms are not recognized and treated immediately. Most people who get the flu think "Don't be such a baby". They can't afford child care, so they go into work. They sit at the cubicle next to yours, and now you are breathing the infected air, so you get sick too. You bring the flu home to your DH, who is in the middle of preparing for a very important meeting. He can't afford to get sick right now, so he takes some aspirin, goes into work, and infects the whole office.
By the time you realize that maybe this flu isn't going away as fast as it should be, you really should be admitted to the hospital by then. Good luck convinced a man to go for "just a case of the sniffles". Then complete respiratory attack sets in, often with coronary and kidney complications. After that, you're probably thinking "I should have just risked any side effects from the flu shot." At this point, it's up to Hashem if you survive or not.
In case you're wondering, it also gives plenty of airtime to people who are extremely antivaxx, and they get to state their views in no uncertain terms.

I just found out that coronaviruses are strains like MERS and SARS, both potentially very deadly even in healthy adults.
(I really, really wanted to be a biology researcher of some kind, but I just didn't have the math skills to get to that level. I don't let it stop me from being an armchair researcher, though. )

Coronavirus is an upper respiratory disease. You are more likely to get it from being in the same room with someone who has it, or touching an infected surface.
99% of all garlic is from China. Don't buy pre-peeled garlic, always get the ones that are still sealed up in their little papery shells. You can't get sick from it. The only thing garlic would carry is fungus, and you can't catch that. If your garlic looks moldy, throw it away and wash your hands. You'll be fine.

How is this strain different from coronavirus already seen? My daughter had coronavirus last year and Bh was no big deal. We were told that it sometimes causes pneumonia but Bh didn’t.
