Growing up in Europe we were off from Dec.24 to January 6 not to mention's our skying vacation in february which was called "energieferien" where I'm from.
Oh and let's not forget a week for Easter and about 10 other Xtian days over the course of the year that no one else celebrates and have the word "Mary" in them.
As kids we just thought it was great to be off all the time...Im not sure what my parents thought

Over here it's called Sportferien. And yes, for a country whose churches are empty except for elderly ladies, it's amazing how they celebrate every single religious holiday. Even ones I never heard of before. Ascension Day, anyone? (The Jewish schools aren't closed then, though, but I do have off from work.)

Not to make anyone jealous , but here in Israel we are actually off all together, when there are Jewish holidays. If for no other reason, it's a good thing to be here. The whole country celebrates the Yamim Noraim together (no one looking at the calendar for all the days missed). It's common for parents to take off Chol HaMoed Succot and Pesach to be with the children. Chanuka is one big festival, kids off for 7 of the 8 days etc. Ahhhhh....... Next one coming up is a three day Purim vacation, then 2.5 or so weeks of Pesach..... What a life!!!
I remember the days when I had one kid in this school, one kid in that school. One took off Xmas, one in Jan. Then we were in a school where they split, half in Dec. half in Jan. Enough to drive you insane!

maybe you should be grateful. It's a terrible traffic day and an even worse traffic ACCIDENT day. People have been drinking nonstop since the 24th of december, but even those who haven't, have been drinking since midday at least. You don't want your loved ones on the road on this day--which is another reason I resent day-school commuter yeshivahs being open.
