The school leaves it up to the parents what to tip the rebbeim. The teachers and morahs are priced at between 15 and 20 depending on which grade. I asked a few other parents what they tip and got 40, 50, and 150 per rebbe as answers. Now I really dont want my kids singled out as their parents gave real cheap tips, !!!!!!!!!! what to do?????

I'm really trying to not to fall off the chair now. are you serious? I mean, what they deserve in terms of brachas and everything for what they do...you can't put a number on.

but, we're on a tight budget. and that's putting it mildly! $150 per teacher per child???? is this real or it's gotten overblown...like shalach manos...losing the inyan here...

Most schools give one class gift. Everyone contributes 15- 25 dollars and the class mother gives one check from all. $150 per sounds kind of high.

Tehilla, don't worry I was in your position last year when I found out about it. Thinking: What else don't I know? Last year for DD's class a mother organized it and went around collecting checks. This year I haven't heard anything yet but I don't think anybody expects 150 per child.

just a side note- many schools consider this as part of a rebbe's salary (believe it or not)... It's tough to be a Rebbi, and they often don't get paid well.

A rebbi and a teacher are seen differently. I taught in a cheder and saw the note that went home (wasn't supposed to see it...). It said they were collecting $10 from each kid to pool for the morah (me) and that it was more appropriate for the parents to tip the rebbi individually. So while I got $200 total, the rebbi got around $100+ from each kid!

OP here, So what do I do??? We have more than one Rebbe to tip. We're unemployed now and arghhh!!! I need to borrow $ to tip?! What's the cheapest I can get away with (for Brooklyn)?

Any of you teachers or husbands who are Rebbeim, what do you think, how will tipping less affect the relationship to my kids? Is it okay to tip cheap or better not to "insult" with a smaller amount?

I already need to tip $60 excluding the Rebbeim.

Unfortunately there are people who will treat your kids according to your tip but hopefully they are few and far between. Make sure to write a nice, personal note along with whatever you are able to give.

My husband is a Rebbi and he would never ever treat a child differently because of a Chanukah tip, or because of a parent's behavior.

Whatever you end up tipping, I just wanted to point out that's it important to do it with class. You'd be amazed at what some parents do.

It is always nice to get a simple thank you card for all the hard work a Rebbi puts into your son no matter how much you're tipping.

this is the 1st year my son has a rebbi,
how do I give him the tip? do I send it in with my son or give it myself?
my husband is usually a work except sunday but they dont have yeshiva next sunday.
should we give it tomorrow so my dh can dive it?

The nicest is when the parents write a really nice, heartfelt letter. last year a parent that I KNOW has no money gave me $20 with a really nice note and I really appreciated it, even though it was unnecessary. Why don't you give a gift instead- if you wrap it really fancy, it can look more expensive then it was.

My dh is a rebbe and I would say abt. 1/2 the class tips on Chanukah and/or Purim. It really doesn't matter how much you give (of course if you can give more it is always helpful) but my dh always appreciates it even if it's a nice note with $20. Btw the tipping NEVER interferes with how he treats the children.
