Complain about that to my frum, Chassidishe neighbor whose toddler is receiving Hepatitis B treatments. Hepatitis B is a hearty virus.
The HPV vaccine does not cause infertility, but it can prevent infertility problems caused by HPV. However, it is linked to szual activity, but not necessarily intrcourse.

I am very pro vaccine.
however, I chose not to give this vaccine to my children.
Too many side effects and its too new with not enough of a benefit to take any risk.
Risk benefit analysis = no
the contagion factor also - it is only spread through relations
they used to give it only to girls and now also to boys -- what changed?

Ppl realized that HPV can cause cancer in boys also.

Yes, there have been numerous reports of girls experiencing "Primary Ovarian Failure"
But no worries, because Dr. Paul Offit says that Gardisil doesn't cause Primary Ovarian failure. He says that all that those reports prove, is that Gardisil doesn't prevent Primary Ovarian Failure. If you are comfortable with that, by all means, take it.

amother [ OP ] wrote: | I found this information on line: According to the CDC, the number of cervical cancers diagnosed each year that are “probably caused by any HPV type” is 10,751 (out of a current US female population of 168,082,484). Gardasil does not handle all the HPV types that there are ..only nine actually. And these nine cause 70 percent of cervical cancers. So this vaccine will not prevent the other 30 percent. Also I wonder why the CDC writes "probably caused"? Are they saying they do not know for sure that cervical cancer comes from HPV? I would be wary about this vaccine just in case it does cause long term side effects that I am reading about. I think the pap smear is a better choice until they know more about this vaccine. |
It is absolutely known that hpv can cause cervical cancer, and gardasil protects against the most virulent, cancer causing strains. Extensive research has been done. It sounds like you don’t know much about this topic, honestly.

HPV is an STD. Why would you give it to your frum preteen? My Obgyn who has seen 1000s of women said that he has never seen a case of cervical cancer in a frum woman. Also, I know of too many girls who have had bad reactions to gardasil. I would definitely hold off on this one!

Bc rape happens.
Bc they might eventually marry someone who did sleep with other ppl before marriage.
Bc they might decide to sleep with someone before marriage.

Do you put all frum teens on BC because rape happens? Or can we assume that frum teens don't need BC?

As has already been pointed out, HPV doesn't ONLY cause cervical cancer and due to the various ways that couples cohabit, these cancers can affect several parts of the body.
The virus is very prevalent and millions catch it each year but it usually goes away on its own. Even with that fact, HPV related cancers kill thousands of people a year. Obviously people who are celebate or monogamous are at lower risk

I don't see what one has to do with the other. But it would be smart to educate kids on All options even if you hope they don't need them.

My sister told me she has seen several frum women in her practice who could've been protected by the gardasil vaccine.
Both my older DD's had the vaccine and my next one is about to start with it. Neither of my big girls had more than soreness at the sight as a reaction.

You realize that the vaccine teaches the immune system to prevent HPV infection - not attack ovaries. Just because HPV is an STD doesnt mean the vaccine suddenly reaches the body to attack its s3xual organs. That is so ignorant.

There are many frum ladies who have had HPV, I am one of them. I wish I had the vaccine when I was younger.

It seems that the science may not be settled here! I came across this article that has medical studies showing that those who get this vaccine can end up getting different, more higher risk types of HPV!

My friend in law school died of cervical cancer. It's the kind of thing that often isn't diagnosed until it's too late. I definitely plan on giving the vaccine to my daughters.
And by the way, I think all of the vaccine bashers on this site are NUTS!!!!

I am sorry to hear that your friend died of cervical cancer. I wonder if she went for annual pap smears bec if she did, then it should/would have been caught at the pre-cancerous stage.

I heard that several girls stopped getting their period after getting the vaccine. And the reason they are recommending the vaccine for younger than until now (9 years old! Instead of 12) is so that people won't realize what's happening and be able to say your kid just has an issue, unrelated.

I was too old to get the vaccine by the time it came out. At that time, you had to be under 25. I was VERY s-xually active before becoming frum, and I ended up with HPV twice. I'm not a specialist or anything, but my understanding (based on research and what Dr.s told me) is that it clears your system after a few years (it did for me,) and that if you get regular PAP smears, they will detect the abnormal cells and can treat you waaayyyy before cancer sets in. I had yearly PAPs, biopsies twice when a PAP came back abnormal, and a cryoscopy once, and voila, the next biopsy was clean. This all happened more than ten years ago, and I am B"H fine and healthy.
I don't trust the vaccine, and don't plan to give it to my children.

My friend, who died of cervical cancer, had not been getting annual Pap smears because she didn't have insurance and didn't think to go to a clinic. We were in our 20s and there was no Obamacare or anything like it. By the time she saw symptoms (abnormal bleeding), it was too late and she died. If she would have had the vaccine, she would not have died. The weird thing is that I heard the same exact story about another person who I don't know well. We are too old to have the vaccine (early 40s now) but obviously since I know 2 lives it would have saved, I am pro the vaccine. Also, there is no medical conspiracy "out to get you." Vaccines just save lives, that's it.

To hotpink and others: very important...all the literature says that you STILL have to get annual pap smears even with the vaccine bec the vaccine only covers HPV that is responsible for 70 percent of cervical cancers. that means 30 percent of cervical cancers have nothing to do with the HPV types in the vaccine.
