I was just wondering what ppl. usually give?
Over here the Mohels don't charge (officially), but ppl. generally give. We were told $200 is the "going rate"....
Is that close to what ppl. pay in your area?

We gave our Mohel $300. Totally worth every penny. He was on time, fast and efficient. Even my FIL was impressed (and he's not religious and works in research science fields).

I think it was NIS 1200 each time (same mohel). Ministry of Health & Religious Affairs Office has a recommendd fee for a "regular" mohel of NIS 500, and for an "expert" NIS 700 . But a mohel in very high demand is permitted to charge more. I think many have a "pay what you can" policy.

Our mohel doesn't take money. Last time we sent him flowers. This time we haven't done anything yet...should really take care of it.

Do you mean that he doesn't charge you personally or that he doesn't charge anyone? If so, how does he make a living?

I think we gave $600. I asked my husband, but he's not sure.

We paid $450, but that was a while ago. He did travel about an hour though.

He doesn't charge anyone. He does milah for the mitzva and makes a living as a teacher plus does other things on the side.

The mohel we used doesn't "charge" but does take $. It's about not charging for a mitzvah. The same way you don't "invite" to a bris. But the parents can certainly give a "gift". We asked him what the going rate was for other mohelim & he told us.

if you use an official hospital mohel (they have them in some places) they may take insurance. we paid ours about 500, I think.

The mohel we used also refused to take money from us, and he travelled from another country. (The local community pays the travel costs for shul members) I think he takes money from other people though, but maybe since dh is a rabbi, he didn't want to take money.
He is a successful businessman besides being a mohel, so we didn't press the point.

According to the Torah a Mohel is forbidden to take money for this task, but a "donation" or something of the sort is allowed, not in a direct way. Something like that.
We tried to give something and even send a gift to him and he REFUSED. He does this on the side and is one of the best when we lived in Florida. He even kept on checking on ds when we saw him at other brit millas we were invited to or other community events he happend to be at too. Good thing because ds needed a "tweak" :-)

I don't remember how much we gave. my bil was the mohel and he was gr8. It was around 400-450. He told us that he had redone a boys bris at age 8 because it wasn't halachically properly done the first time by someone else, and I think the boys father realized that and called my bil to redo it. have you ever heard such a story?
