my friend got married last week and her chassan did the coolest thing. as they were singing "Im Eshkachaich Yerushalayim" under the chuppah, he broke the glass BEFORE the song was finished. then, the song finished, there was a pause, then the MAZEL TOV shout and the jumpy "end-of-chuppah" music. it was so nice, cuz usually everyone's response to the broken glass is MAZEL TOV- but that's not the point of breaking the glass!

how interesting.... never heard of it being done in that manner despite what you say, which is 100% correct- "mazel tov" isn't exactly the response to the meaning behind the glass.
Some ppl break in middle of chupa, not at the end to prevent scenario.

it's strange only because that happens at 90% of the weddings I go to.

I've been to many wedding where they sing it. In fact, we had someone sing it under our Chuppa when we got married. I guess we forgot to tell my in-laws that we were going to do it, becuase they were quite shocked! It's a fairly new Minhag, I don't think they used to do it 20 years ago.

I don't think I have ever heard of someone singing that but it's very nice and of course totally makes sense. Also a reminder why we are breaking the glass. I have also seen at many wedding breaking the glass in the middle of the chuppah so that people DO NOT say mazal tov. Why would you say mazal tov to remembering the destruction of yerushalayim and the beis hamikdash?
Isn't it odd what a custom is has become to say mazal tov when a glass breaks? The other day a waiter at a restaurant drops a plate, it crashes and the restaurant turns and says, "MAZAL TOV!!!"

it seems some people started it and others liked it and copied it

think so too because I never seen it to and I have been by chabad, sfardi, litfish weddings and haven't heard of it being sung either.

I've been to sfardic weddings in israel where it's sang.
have not been to a wedding where the glass was broken before the end, so to prevent the "mazzal tov" when breaking, but must say it makes sense!
