Do I need to go to a sofer to buy one? Like it has to be written up like Tfillin? And does anyone know about what the price is?

Can you clarify the question? What kind of megillah do you want and for what purpose?

You definitely don't need one. Many (most?) people just follow along from a printed Chumash. If you do want a kosher one, you buy from a sofer, but they're not cheap. The cheapest is probably around $600-700, with nicer ones in the $1000-$2000 range, and going up to several thousand.

A Megillah is the first real thing a sofer writes. Sometimes you could find a guy who recently learned safaris who is very artistic with a beautiful ktav. Those would be a bit cheaper. They may not be as clear though.

Form some reason I believe a Megilla doesn’t need to be written by a sofer. Maybe I am making that up.
But it usually is. They range between $800 and $2000.00.
You don’t need one unless you are the one doing he Kriah l.
