Hi! Im teaching upper elementary this year and I really want to start off well.
Does anyone have any ideas of a really great way to start off the year?
Im teaching language arts so I was thinking along the lines of a really powerful story to read to them about effort or something like that...The problem is that I don't know of any like that.
It doesn't have to be a story. Id appreciate any and all ideas of a great 1st day lesson. Thanks so much in advance!

Personally I think the "first day of school inspirational story" kind of thing gets boring really fast. Set up your goals and expectations for the year, get to know the kids a little, and then start teaching whatever your curriculum is.

1. Introduce yourself briefly
2. Go over a handout listing class procedures and rules, and major topics you’ll be covering
3. Pass out books
4. Have girls fill out a form about themselves to turn in to you (ask them questions about their hobbies and interests, not just boring facts, and don’t ask anything personal like stuff about their family).
IME girls don’t want to hear an inspirational story on the first day. They want to know if the teacher will have control of the class, if she seems confident, and if she’ll be fair.
