I also object to "slutty" (used to describe brownies???) A page called "I F-ing love science", (the name not the page) expressions like LMAO or you look HOT! when use by frum people.
I'm sure these people would never use words like that IRL, (except maybe in private) so why is it ok on the internet? |
I never thought twice about slutty brownies until I made them for my kids. Then we started calling them sloppy brownies :-)

#kosherfoodporn
Although if you have a filter you may not yield any results.

Op, I agree with you! I find it offensive when frum bloggers use this term.

My guess is it's your filter, or that you have Google set to Safe Search.

I totally agree.
And with certain food bloggers, I feel like screaming "Do you even know what you are SAYING?!"
Lol. Then I feel like I'M the one with the dirty mind because it became so common already.
But yes, the more you see it, the more you become desensitized.

My DH says I overthink things, and this must be an example. Similar to BigSis's interpretation, I always understood that the expression "foodporn" was a self-denegrating way of acknowledging that obsessive attention to food or to the satisfaction of eating can become a narcissistic, soulless, and ultimately unsatisfying experience.
In other words, both s-x [filth] and food [filth] have the same victims: real-life relationships and experiences.
Interestingly, both types of [filth] have similar trickle-down effects in society. S-x [filth] influences general culture to make us insecure about our bodies and our intimate "performance." Food [filth] makes us feel insecure about inviting guests to our home, worrying that we're not good enough cooks or that our table won't pass muster compared to some Pinterest posting.
So maybe the problem isn't the name "foodporn." Maybe the problem is that excessive focus on the mechanics of anything will devalue it.

Thank you. That explains it as DH said he didn't install a filter.I didn't even know there was such a thing. I wonder why anyone pays to install a filter when Google provides it free.

To be honest, I find it to be an apt term. Both kinds of "[filth]" are images that people salivate over. That said, its probably not the classiest way to refer to it.

Well, I just searched the hashtag, and I must say, I'm disappointed!
I mean, a hashtag like that suggests an image that's going to make my mouth water and induce daydreams of waiters bearing plates of indescribably tasty morsels.
A more accurate hashtag would have been something like, "#StuffOurRestaurantServes" or "#BrowniesThatArePrettyGood."
So even if the hashtag itself doesn't offend me, I'm definitely offended by people applying it to homogenized Chinese take-out food. Talk about bait and switch!

bigsis144 wrote: | In a way, calling it #foodporn makes sense, because, seriously, in real life, my food doesn't actually look like that.
Sometimes I just like to feast my eyes on a fantasy that looks better than reality... even though it took hours of primping and picking the most perfect looking of the bunch and the right lighting and just-so camera angles to achieve.
See, it's a perfect metaphor 'cuz I'd still rather eat the food that's on my plate, even if it's not pinterest worthy. |
I am not saying the metaphor doesn't make sense, just that it doesn't seem appropriate for kosher restaurants/ frum "foodies" to use such a term.

when I googled, 2 pictures that came up were of a melon cut in half, and a salad composed of sliced tomatoes and cucumbers.
Some people clearly are overoptimistic about their cooking abilities.

If a kosher restaurant described their dessert as orgasmic, then yes, it would bother me.

Funnily enough, back in 1950's CS Lewis tried to explain why [filth] was bad by precisely this analogy! He was using the *reductio ad absurdum* technique.
I don't have the quote on hand, but his point, as I remember it, was, "can't you see what a perversion of zexuality [filth] is? Imagine if someone felt that way about another pleasure -- food. Imagine if they photographed it the same way, used similar terms to describe it, etc. Wouldn't that be CRAZY?"
And now...

I've never seen it at a Jewish establishment! Wow! I would not like it if I did. I have seen it pretty much only online - like on Facebook and whatnot.

I think food can be zexy, orgasmic, but not [filthy] ... naked food is probably quite bland
zex-on-the-beach = a blue tasty alcoholic drink with an umbrella
better-than-zex chocolate cake = it relaxes your hormones
"[filth]" however is just one big lie and a disgrace to true intimacy ~ very not kosher even for non-jews

This has been bothering me for a while too. There is one particular young frum instagrammer who has a wide following and always uses this terminology. I don’t think there is a deep meaning to it; rather I think this generation is so desensitized to shmutz that they truly don’t see anything wrong with it.

Agreed. This is far more worrying than the use of the word in the first place.
