Buying a seat in shul for the yomtov davening

Last night, dh was all upset. I asked him why and he said that his mom, who is single and alone with no family (we are 6000 miles away), wanted to buy a seat in shul for the holidays and they told her no bec she didn't have membership! and this isn't somewhere where tehy don't know her. they know her and her sitch and they refused her. a chutzpa, they think they're so holy and can't make a small exception for a single woman!

$100 is a lot???

In a shul where some of my family members daven seats for Yom Tov are $350 and up depending on the location just for the High Holy Days. I thought that's normal.

Blossom, that is more like what I'm used to. I've never heard of shuls that don't have dues and charge so little for yontif seats.

Where we go to, we pay membership fees, and then get seats (not per person). Since we go to 2 different shuls during the year, we pay both shuls the fees. I'm not exactly sure of the amounts.

We just moved...we need to pay membership in the new shul but can't do it this month. We'll buy seats (or pay membership...for 2 people it comes out to the same thing...if we need a 3rd seat next year we'll keep our membership!) at the shul we'll daven in for yom tov. Either way, it's about NIS 600 at both places.

For the first time in years we didn't buy. We received the papers too late Exploding anger

It will be easier by the women, I hope my husband will get a seat though. Today shouldn't be a problem and neither will be tomorrow at day, but for Neila it will be FULL.

In my shul the dues are $800 for couples under 35 adn I think 1200 for over 35. You get two high holiday tickets with that as well. and this does NOT include aliyahs, tuition, events etc. It is purely "membership".

ChocMoose: You keep talking about how frugal you are--- so why are you buying a $500 fancy, custom-made sukkah?! Go to Home Depot, but some wood, and make one yourself!! $20-- max! If you don't own a car, have them deliver-- yeah, that's an expense, but still a lot less than $500!

yeah, we don't have a sukkah this year. other years we had sukkahs for the whole building, and one year we had a sukkah that came with the apt, and stayed with the apt when we left...

so. we're still not sure what we're going to do. no money. no extras either. oh well, I'm sure we'll figure out something. Hashem will have to help!

We did this last year.
Definitely comes out cheaper, but $20?!? Are you funny? Or did you mean $200, which is about how much we spent?
But its a major job!! They dont have ready panels, you gotta nails on 4 pieces of wood onto each panel, drill holes to attach, shellac the wood.....
Not everyone is so handy, and if you have to pay some workers to put it together for you, then its really not much cheaper.

it takes a lot of time to make a homemade sukkah also if you don't have a place to store it its not worth it, better to spend more and get something that will last

we went to a place with free seats, yom tov is a lot of expenes right after the summer and beging of school so it is hard to pay also where I live we shul hop, my dh switches between shuls, the funny thing is that my father became a member to the shul near me and he doesn't even live here!

seats were $180 per person by us, and we had to buy 4. YK morning I get to shul a bit late (I have little ones) and there was an older lady in one of my seats, I just didnt feal right having her move so my 7 yr old could sit down even if I did pay for the seat for my kid.....I was frusterated since my kids were all pulling on me, and I always buy the extra seats so they can sit and daven with their bag of cheerios, looking a book quietly, etc. I was debating asking her to switch to another open seat (a friend of mine who I knew wasnt coming) b/c I couldnt put my kid to sit there, but just felt a bit awkward given that it was for a kid. I was a little relieved when she left before musaf.
